IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal has voiced significant concerns regarding the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic settings, stating that the distinction between helpful AI tools and outright cheating has become increasingly ambiguous. This comes as IIT Kanpur is actively transitioning into an ‘AI-first’ campus, embedding AI into various aspects of its operations, including governance, pedagogy, research, and student well-being.
Agrawal emphasized that while using AI for language refinement based on a student’s own ideas is acceptable, the generation of ideas by AI tools constitutes plagiarism. He noted the challenge lies not just in detecting AI-generated content, but in assessing the originality of thought. To address this, IIT Kanpur is exploring new evaluation systems designed to differentiate between appropriate AI assistance and dishonest use.
In response to the rapid advancements in AI, the institute is planning to introduce a core course on responsible AI usage for all students. The aim is not to train them as developers, but to equip them with the knowledge to apply AI responsibly in their respective fields, including humanities and social sciences. The curriculum review cycle, typically a decade long, is being accelerated to keep pace with technological changes, with a new committee expected to be formed next month.

Beyond classroom ethics, IIT Kanpur is also leveraging AI for various initiatives. Researchers are developing AI tools for drone autonomy, enabling drones to navigate without GPS using visual cues. Additionally, faculty in biosciences and cognitive science are creating AI tools to detect early signs of psychological distress among students. These efforts underscore a broader institutional commitment to integrating AI thoughtfully and ethically across the campus.
