IIT Indore Introduces New B.Tech Programs in AI-Driven Healthcare and Sustainable Engineering

TLDR: The Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I), has launched two pioneering B.Tech programs: one in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and medical device innovations, and another in environmental economics and sustainable engineering. These programs are part of two new academic schools established in collaboration with the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF), aiming to address critical national and global challenges in health and sustainability.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Indore (IIT-I), has announced the launch of two groundbreaking Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programs, marking a significant step in interdisciplinary education. These new offerings include a B.Tech in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare and medical device innovations, and a B.Tech in environmental economics and sustainable engineering. The programs are housed within two newly established academic schools: the Mehta Family School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering, and the Mehta Family School of Sustainability.

This initiative is a result of a strategic collaboration with the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF). The School of Biosciences and Biomedical Engineering will focus on critical areas such as AI in healthcare, bioinformatics, drug discovery, fundamental molecular biology, bio-manufacturing, and wearable health technologies. A key objective is to develop data-driven solutions for endemic diseases like chikungunya and dengue, and to combat the growing threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). The collaboration also plans for a bio-manufacturing hub to facilitate the technical de-risking of enzyme, smart proteins, and API manufacturing scale-up in India.

Concurrently, the Mehta Family School of Sustainability will concentrate on energy systems and battery technology, environmental economics and environmental law, and water and climate studies. This school is set to launch India’s first B.Tech program in Environmental Economics and Sustainable Engineering and aims to educate over 1,500 sustainability professionals through various programs over the next decade. It will also establish three Centres of Excellence dedicated to energy systems and battery technology, environmental economics and environmental law, and water and climate studies.

Dr. Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT-I, emphasized the transformative nature of this partnership, stating, ‘This collaboration with the Mehta Family Foundation is not just about two schools — it is about a new chapter in IIT Indore’s evolution. It exemplifies how academic excellence, international collaboration, and social vision can intersect to address real-world challenges.’ Rahul Mehta, founder of the MFF, added, ‘India needs institutions that can generate intellectual capital to lead sustainable development and healthcare reform. I am confident that IIT Indore, with its talent and location at the heart of India, will become a beacon of interdisciplinary excellence.’
