New Delhi: In a proactive step towards navigating the evolving landscape of education shaped by artificial intelligence, the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has issued a detailed report and guidelines for the responsible use of generative AI (GenAI) tools in academic settings. This initiative comes after an internal survey conducted by the institute revealed a widespread adoption of GenAI tools among its student body, with a striking 80% reporting usage. Of these, 81% engage with these technologies several times a week, and approximately 10% have invested in paid subscriptions, citing limitations of free versions.
The committee, formed on April 9, 2024, by IIT Delhi Director Rangan Banerjee, was tasked with developing preliminary guidelines for the fair use of AI tools in the short term, and in the long term, providing clear guidance, identifying necessary training and support infrastructure, and recommending a governance structure and AI policies. According to Director Rangan Banerjee, ‘We mandated that all academic programmes include exposure to artificial intelligence and machine learning. Most departments have already incorporated the elements, ensuring that all graduates from IIT Delhi will soon possess strong proficiency in AI. This committee was formed on April 9, 2024, to guide this transition and determine the best approach for integrating AI.’
A cornerstone of the newly released guidelines is the mandatory disclosure of any content generated or significantly assisted by GenAI tools. This is crucial for ensuring transparency and maintaining academic integrity. The report highlights that while GenAI tools offer benefits such as personalized feedback and customized learning experiences, they also pose concerns regarding accuracy, misleading responses, and the potential to undermine critical thinking skills if over-relied upon.
Key aspects of the guidelines include:
Disclosure: Any work or content created with the assistance of GenAI tools must be fully disclosed, whether through captions, footnotes, or a statement within the work.
Ownership and Responsibility: Users are held fully responsible for verifying the accuracy of AI-generated content, fact-checking it rigorously, and ensuring it is original and free from plagiarism.
Data Privacy: Users are advised to exercise caution when inputting data or queries into GenAI tools, as such inputs could potentially become publicly accessible. Screening information to exclude sensitive or private details before using these tools is recommended.

Furthermore, the institute recommends regular workshops in collaboration with academic units to educate and sensitize both students and faculty on the ethical, responsible, and effective use of AI. Faculty development programs are also encouraged to include dedicated modules on AI’s applications and implications. IIT Delhi is notably the first Indian Institute of Technology to formally announce such a comprehensive set of guidelines, aiming to clarify ethical usage and ensure academic work progresses without unintended consequences.
