TLDR: IgniteTech CEO Eric Vaughan controversially replaced 80% of his workforce in 2023 due to employee resistance to AI integration. Two years later, he stands by his decision, highlighting the company’s successful launch of AI solutions, maintained 75% EBITDA margins, and a significant acquisition as justification. Vaughan, however, does not recommend his approach to other leaders, attributing it to cultural resistance rather than a deliberate strategy.
In a move that sent ripples through the corporate world, IgniteTech CEO Eric Vaughan made headlines in 2023 by replacing nearly 80% of his company’s workforce. The drastic measure was a direct response to employees’ refusal to embrace an aggressive artificial intelligence (AI) transformation mandate. Two years on, Vaughan remains steadfast in his conviction, stating he would make the same ‘extremely difficult’ decision again, according to a report by The Times of India on August 19, 2025.
The restructuring was initiated after Vaughan declared AI an ‘existential threat’ to traditional business operations. His strategy included ‘AI Mondays,’ dedicated weekly sessions where staff were required to work exclusively on AI-related projects and initiatives. Surprisingly, the most significant resistance came from the technical staff, who voiced concerns about AI limitations rather than embracing its potential. In contrast, marketing and sales departments showed greater willingness to adopt the new tools and participate in training.
Vaughan’s commitment to AI integration was substantial, with 20% of the company’s payroll invested in AI training, including tool reimbursements and specialized prompt engineering courses. Despite these efforts, the company faced ’employee sabotage and outright refusal to participate,’ ultimately leading to the wholesale personnel replacement over a twelve-month period.
The controversial strategy, however, appears to have yielded positive financial results. By 2024, IgniteTech successfully launched two patent-pending AI solutions. The company also maintained impressive EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) margins of approximately 75% and completed a significant acquisition, underscoring the financial viability of Vaughan’s bold approach.
Industry research from the AI platform WRITER supports IgniteTech’s experience, indicating widespread corporate challenges with AI adoption. The study suggests that one-third of workers actively undermine AI initiatives, and 41% of millennial and Generation Z employees resist AI implementation through various non-compliance tactics.

Despite the strong performance metrics, Vaughan does not advocate his mass replacement strategy for other business leaders. He characterizes it as an ‘unintended consequence of cultural resistance,’ rather than a deliberate management approach, emphasizing the importance of cultural adaptation alongside technological change.
