IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization, and its IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) have announced a pivotal step in advancing global AI governance: the inclusion of their comprehensive portfolio of over 100 global AI-related standards within the new International AI Standards Exchange. This Exchange is designed as a centralized repository for international AI standards, with the overarching goal of fostering collaboration and ensuring the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence systems worldwide.
The impetus for the International AI Standards Exchange stemmed directly from the 2024 United Nations AI Advisory Body’s Report, ‘Governing AI for Humanity,’ which recognized IEEE and its global AI standards for their impactful work. As a major standards body, IEEE was instrumental in the establishment of this crucial Exchange.
Kathleen Kramer, IEEE President and CEO, who is slated to speak at the AI for Good Summit’s High-Level AI Standards Panel this year, emphasized the organization’s foundational mission. “IEEE’s mission of advancing technology for the benefit of humanity is foundational to our institution and our communities,” Kramer stated. She further highlighted the substantial impact of IEEE SA’s work, noting, “The work of IEEE SA illustrates how direct, inclusive collaboration throughout the global community can make a substantial impact. By having our standards included in the International AI Standards Exchange, we are reinforcing efforts to make IEEE AI standards and guidance easily discoverable and accessible to policymakers, developers, regulators, and other stakeholders seeking trusted, open, and collaborative processes and high-integrity resources to help advance globally interoperable and trusted AI systems.”

The IEEE 7000™ standards series: This series specifically addresses critical ethical and societal considerations in AI and autonomous systems, including transparency, privacy, algorithmic bias, and accountability.
The Ethically Aligned Design (EAD) Framework: This framework has been a significant catalyst for global discussions on human rights and ethics in AI. It has informed various AI principles, including those adopted by the OECD, and aspects of the UN Global Digital Compact, serving as a resilient foundation as AI technologies continue to evolve.
IEEE CertifAIEd™: This innovative personnel credentialing and product certification program rigorously evaluates AI systems for transparency, accountability, and the reduction of bias. It provides organizations with credible evidence of responsible AI practices, addressing criteria such as algorithmic bias, ethical transparency, privacy, and accountability. Notably, this program is designed to be compatible with upcoming regulations like the EU AI Act and aligns with global regulations under consideration or implementation across the United States, China, the European Union, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other jurisdictions.
The Technology Policy Collaborative (TPC): This program offers collaborative spaces for government bodies and policymakers to address technology innovation and its societal impact, facilitating the development of practical, adaptive frameworks and governance approaches that maximize the benefits of technology.
Alpesh Shah, IEEE SA Managing Director, underscored the organization’s global standing. “IEEE SA is a globally recognized and respected standardization body, offering multiple pathways to achieve consensus while adhering to the WTO principles,” Shah commented. He added, “A unique aspect of IEEE SA is that its collective global intelligence can be applied contextually in a national, regional, or international context. We delivered on the requested contribution to the Exchange due to the global nature of the work and its meaningful and ongoing impact, in this case, in the field of AI systems.”
