TLDR: The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) has introduced a new GenAI Accelerator Programme, an eLearning initiative designed to equip its members with essential generative artificial intelligence skills. This program, launching in August 2025, addresses a significant skills gap identified in the profession, with over half of surveyed ICAEW Chartered Accountants recognizing GenAI as both a primary opportunity and challenge, and 85% willing to use AI but feeling unprepared due to a lack of training. The comprehensive program features eight courses, practical resources, and a five-step adoption framework to foster confidence and leadership in AI integration within finance and accounting.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) is set to revolutionize the finance and accounting profession with the launch of its new GenAI Accelerator Programme. This extensive eLearning initiative, scheduled to commence in August 2025, aims to significantly enhance the generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) capabilities of its members, directly addressing a critical skills gap within the industry.
According to ICAEW’s 2025 member research, technology, automation, and GenAI are perceived by more than half of surveyed Chartered Accountants as both the foremost opportunity and challenge facing their profession. While a substantial 85% of members expressed a willingness to adopt AI technologies, many reported feeling inadequately prepared, citing insufficient training as a major barrier to implementation.
Peter Beard ACA, founder of GenFinance.AI and a key partner in the program’s development, emphasized the transformative nature of this technology. “The finance and accounting profession has experienced waves of new technologies over the decades, but nothing like this,” Beard stated. “The scope and scale of what GenAI can do, its flexibility and its cost-effectiveness mean unparalleled and democratised access to knowledge and capability. It is one of the most fundamental technological changes of our time. GenAI is levelling the playing field, empowering professionals at every level like no other technology previously before.” He further added, “The accelerator has been created to ensure ICAEW members can confidently experiment and engage with AI, with practical support on each stage of their GenAI adoption journey.”
The GenAI Accelerator Programme is structured into eight comprehensive eLearning courses, each comprising several modules designed to be completed in approximately one hour. The curriculum is meticulously crafted to blend foundational knowledge with practical applications, tailored specifically for finance workflows. The initial course will lay the groundwork by introducing participants to core AI concepts, key technologies, and the ethical and regulatory considerations crucial for responsible GenAI deployment in professional settings.
Subsequent courses will delve into more advanced topics, demonstrating how GenAI can be seamlessly integrated into various accounting functions. These include finance operations, reporting and compliance, strategic planning, risk management, and corporate governance and assurance. The program will also offer specialized guidance for applying AI in specific practice areas such as audit, tax services, advisory, and restructuring. Furthermore, sector-specific advice will be provided for diverse industries, including financial services, retail, manufacturing, public sector, healthcare finance, construction, real estate, charity, and energy.
A central component of the program is a structured five-step framework designed to guide members through the entire GenAI adoption process. This framework encompasses identifying and validating use cases, prioritizing them, piloting and testing solutions, scaling and integrating them into existing operations, and continuously monitoring for improvements. Participants will also have the opportunity to earn digital badges upon successful completion of each course, with a prestigious ‘GenAI learning excellence badge’ awarded for finishing the entire program, recognizing their mastery of these critical skills.

ICAEW’s objective is to ensure that members not only acquire the technical knowledge to utilize GenAI tools but also develop the confidence to make informed decisions and lead AI adoption within their teams and organizations. “Accountants have the opportunity to get GenAI right first time and that time is now. It’s time to embrace and experiment!” Beard concluded, highlighting the urgency and potential for accountants to lead in this evolving technological landscape.
