IBM to Acquire DataStax, Bolstering Watsonx for Enterprise Generative AI

TLDR: IBM has announced its intent to acquire DataStax, a leading provider of AI and data solutions. This strategic acquisition aims to significantly enhance IBM’s watsonx portfolio, particularly in accelerating the adoption and effectiveness of generative AI applications by addressing the critical need for managing vast amounts of unstructured data. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025.

ARMONK, N.Y. – IBM (NYSE: IBM) has revealed its plan to acquire DataStax, an AI and data solution provider, in a move set to deepen the capabilities of its watsonx platform and address the growing data demands of generative AI for enterprises. The acquisition, announced on February 25, 2025, is poised to strengthen IBM’s commitment to open-source AI and empower businesses to unlock the immense value from their unstructured data.

DataStax is renowned as the creator of AstraDB and DataStax Enterprise, which are NoSQL and vector database capabilities powered by Apache Cassandra®. These technologies are crucial for enabling production-ready generative AI applications. AstraDB, in particular, will enhance the existing vector capabilities of IBM watsonx.data, IBM’s hybrid, open data lakehouse designed for AI and analytics. Furthermore, DataStax’s Langflow, an open-source tool and community for low-code AI application development, will be integrated into watsonx.ai, streamlining the creation of AI applications, especially for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and multi-agent AI systems.

According to Dinesh Nirmal, Senior Vice President, IBM Software, ‘Businesses cannot realize the full potential of generative AI without the right infrastructure – open-source tools and technologies that empower developers, harness unstructured data, and provide a strong foundation for AI applications.’ He emphasized DataStax’s deep competency in this area and its shared commitment with IBM to simplify and scale generative AI for the enterprise.

Chet Kapoor, Chairman and CEO of DataStax, echoed this sentiment, stating, ‘Enterprises want to deliver production AI fast, but are still struggling to unlock the value in their data to power AI applications and agents. We’ve long said that there is no AI without data, and are excited to execute this vision with IBM.’

The acquisition builds on a history of collaboration between IBM and DataStax, which dates back to 2020, including the delivery of DataStax Enterprise as a managed service on IBM Cloud. DataStax boasts hundreds of customers, including major names like FedEx, Capital One, The Home Depot, and Verizon. The company, founded in 2010, is headquartered in Santa Clara, CA.
