Human-Centric Approach Key to AI Leadership, Cognizant Report Highlights Malaysia’s Challenges

TLDR: A new whitepaper by Cognizant, ‘Unleashing the Power of Malaysia’s Human Capital in the AI Age,’ reveals that Malaysia’s ambition to be a global AI leader is hindered by fragmented adoption and a lack of workforce readiness. Despite strong foundational policies, only 11% of C-suite leaders are confident in their workforce’s AI capabilities, with skills shortages and leadership clarity being major barriers. Cognizant advocates for a human-centric AI strategy, emphasizing empowerment over replacement, and calls for local AI innovation, regional collaboration, and ethical governance to foster a sustainable AI ecosystem in Malaysia.

Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a global leader in Artificial Intelligence (AI) faces significant hurdles, primarily stemming from fragmented adoption and insufficient workforce preparedness, according to a recent whitepaper released by Cognizant. The report, titled ‘Unleashing the Power of Malaysia’s Human Capital in the AI Age,’ published on October 23, 2025, underscores that despite robust policy frameworks and infrastructure, the nation struggles to scale AI integration due to low executive confidence and persistent skill gaps.

The study highlights a critical disparity: while the World Economic Forum’s 2025 findings indicate that 86% of employers anticipate AI to revolutionize their businesses, a mere 11% of Malaysia’s C-suite leaders express ‘very high confidence’ in their workforce’s ability to leverage AI effectively. Furthermore, a substantial 66% of leaders identified workforce readiness and clarity in leadership as primary obstacles to AI adoption, with 63% pointing to the skills gap as the foremost impediment to successful transformation.

Thomas Mathew, Vice President of Cognizant for ASEAN and Greater China, articulated the company’s philosophy, stating, ‘We believe AI should empower people, not replace them.’ He emphasized that for Malaysia to truly excel, it must transition from being merely an AI user to becoming an AI producer and innovator. Mathew advocated for ‘human in the loop’ governance, transparent data frameworks, and comprehensive ethical literacy programs. He asserted that these measures would enable Malaysia to establish a regional benchmark, demonstrating that ‘technological advancement and human values can thrive side by side.’

The whitepaper puts forth several key recommendations to bolster Malaysia’s AI leadership. These include fostering the development of local AI intellectual property, spearheading regional collaborations through ASEAN initiatives, and embedding ethics and trust into every phase of AI adoption. It calls for the implementation of policies that actively promote homegrown innovation, the establishment of regional training hubs, and the adoption of human-centric AI governance to cultivate a resilient and sustainable AI ecosystem.

Datuk Muhammad Azmi Zulkifli, CEO of InvestKL, who co-hosted a roundtable discussion with Cognizant, echoed this sentiment, remarking, ‘Malaysia stands poised to become ASEAN’s most trusted AI hub, uniquely multilingual, ethical and driven by innovation.’ He concluded that with the appropriate policies and ambitious vision, Malaysia can indeed achieve this status. The report ultimately concludes that while Malaysia has made commendable strides in its AI journey, sustained growth necessitates a people-centered and value-driven approach to ensure inclusivity, trust, and long-term competitiveness within the evolving digital economy.
