Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, marked its 9th Foundation Day with a week-long series of events from September 22 to 28, 2025, prominently featuring a demo moot court dedicated to the legal implications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the context of culpable homicide. This initiative underscores the university’s commitment to addressing the evolving challenges at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and legal frameworks.
The moot court session, organized by the university’s Moot Court Committee, was led by Chairperson Dr. Shaifali Dixit and Convener Dr. Chandrika. Under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice Chancellor of HPNLU, Shimla, the event provided a crucial platform for academic discourse on the dynamic fusion of technology and law.
The judging panel for the moot court comprised distinguished legal and academic figures: Dr. Sahil Malhotra, a respected advocate at the Himachal Pradesh High Court; Prof. (Dr.) Girjesh Shukla, Finance Officer of HPNLU; and Dr. Mritunjay Kumar, Chief Vigilance Officer at HPNLU. Their collective expertise enriched the discussions and offered diverse perspectives on the complex subject matter.
Beyond the AI-focused moot court, HPNLU Shimla’s Foundation Day celebrations encompassed a wide array of academic, cultural, and social activities. These included a film screening on Human Rights and Disability, a mediation demonstration, drama performances, and a debate competition. The Centre for Law, Business and Economics hosted an Inter-University Commercial Contract Drafting Competition, while the Rotaract Club organized a Blood Donation Camp.
The festivities also featured literary and artistic events such as “Shaam-e-Shayari,” a poetry event, and “Canvas-e-Khayal,” a poster-making competition. Notably, the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Intellectual Property Rights also contributed to the celebrations by organizing a GI Tagged Fashion Ramp Walk, further highlighting the university’s engagement with contemporary issues.

Concluding the week-long celebrations, HPNLU Shimla also hosted “AAGAZ 2025,” a Freshers’ Party designed to welcome the new batch of students. This event, also overseen by Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, was characterized by a formal welcome, a cake-cutting ceremony, talent showcases by freshers, and vibrant dance and music performances by senior students. Awards such as Mr. Fresher, Ms. Fresher, and Best Performer were presented, fostering an atmosphere of camaraderie and joy among the university community.
