Hofstra University has ignited a wave of frustration and criticism within its community following the release of an AI-generated promotional video on June 9, 2025, intended to unveil the new athletics department logo. The video, shared across the university’s HofstraU and HofstraPride Instagram accounts, depicted a pride of lions running through a football stadium, roaring, gnawing at a rival university’s jersey, and ultimately morphing into the new logo.
However, the university’s attempt at a modern reveal was met with immediate and widespread negative feedback. Comments under the posts were plentiful with criticisms, with many labeling the content as ‘AI slop’ and ‘tone deaf.’ The primary source of frustration stems from the perception that the university overlooked and devalued the talents of its own students and alumni, particularly those in creative fields, by opting for generative artificial intelligence.
Paris Martinovich, a 2024 criminology graduate from Hofstra, articulated the sentiment of many, stating, ‘This message makes the students feel like their school is not interested in investing in them.’ Martinovich added, ‘Regardless of the video eventually disappearing in their post feed, people will continue to remember that feeling.’ The backlash also extended to online forums, with one Reddit user expressing satisfaction that ‘the community is RIPPING the university a new one for this,’ emphasizing that ‘HOW and WHO (and apparently what also) produces content matter, especially for an institution of higher learning.’
The wave of criticism quickly escalated, culminating in the creation of an online petition. Started by Oscar Munguia, a rising senior and music education major, the petition demands that Hofstra remove the video, issue an apology for its use of generative AI, and commit to denouncing any future use of such software. Munguia’s petition asserts that the use of AI in the promotional video ‘undermines the works of over 100,000 graduates and many current students who attend the university.’ As of July 18, the petition had amassed 434 online signatures.

Adding to the institutional pressure, Hofstra’s Student Government Association (SGA) released its own statement via Instagram on June 16. The SGA observed that while the video was intended to ‘capture the essence of the Pride,’ the use of AI instead left many students feeling ‘wounded and misrepresented.’ They further argued that ‘the use of artificial intelligence undercuts the key liberal arts principles that are foundational to what Hofstra stands for,’ and explicitly called on the university to take down the controversial video. It is noteworthy that at Hofstra, the regulation of AI use in the classroom is currently left to the discretion of individual professors.
