This initiative, spearheaded by its group unit Hitachi Building Systems, is projected to cut the number of workers needed for elevator inspections by 50%. The deployment of this AI-powered solution comes at a crucial time, as Japan grapples with an increasing need for elevator maintenance services coupled with a dwindling supply of experienced mechanics due to an aging workforce and retirements.
Hitachi Building Systems has opted for Nvidia’s open-source multimodal AI software, which will be meticulously customized. This customization process involves extensive training of the system using Hitachi’s proprietary product specifications and comprehensive maintenance manuals. The goal is to create an AI that can accurately identify potential issues and streamline the inspection process.

In practice, maintenance technicians will be equipped with helmets or goggles fitted with cameras, microphones, and speakers. These devices will wirelessly connect to an edge server installed nearby, which will handle the necessary computing tasks. The edge server, in turn, will be linked to central data centers, enabling seamless communication and data processing. This setup will allow the AI to assist technicians in real-time, potentially identifying anomalies and guiding them through complex inspection procedures, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing the manual labor traditionally associated with these tasks.
