Highmark Health and Abridge Forge Alliance to Transform Prior Authorization with AI

TLDR: Highmark Health and Abridge have announced a groundbreaking enterprise-wide collaboration to deploy Abridge’s AI-powered ambient clinical intelligence platform and co-design a revolutionary prior authorization solution. This initiative aims to streamline healthcare processes, significantly reduce administrative burdens for clinicians, and enable real-time approvals for medical services and medications directly at the point of care, potentially transforming a weeks-long process into mere minutes.

Pittsburgh-based healthcare giant Highmark Health has partnered with Abridge, a pioneer in healthcare AI, to fundamentally reshape the prior authorization process and enhance clinical documentation across its extensive network. Announced on August 12, 2025, this collaboration leverages Abridge’s advanced artificial intelligence technology to create a more efficient, less burdensome healthcare experience for both providers and patients.

The core of this initiative involves the deployment of Abridge’s ambient clinical intelligence platform throughout Highmark Health’s entire organization, which encompasses its multi-state insurance services division (Highmark Inc.) and Allegheny Health Network (AHN), a system of 14 hospitals and hundreds of clinics. This AI-powered platform is designed to transform patient-clinician conversations into comprehensive clinical notes in real-time, allowing clinicians to focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks like note-taking.

A key innovation stemming from this partnership is the co-development of an AI-powered prior authorization solution. Unlike traditional methods that often involve lengthy post-encounter processes, this new tool aims to facilitate near-instantaneous approvals at the point of conversation between a patient and physician. Abridge’s technology will compare Highmark’s medical authorization requirements in real-time against the information gathered during the visit. If any necessary documentation is missing, the system will prompt the physician to collect it immediately, ensuring all requirements are met upfront. This proactive approach is expected to accelerate approvals and significantly reduce denials caused by incomplete documentation.

Mark Sevco, president of AHN, emphasized the patient-centric nature of the collaboration, stating, “Providing patients with exceptional, personalized care is our highest priority, and that starts with empowering clinicians to be their best. Abridge’s technology allows clinicians to spend more time listening to and engaging with their patients, leading to a much better overall experience for both parties.” The goal is to transform what can often be a weeks-long prior authorization process into a matter of minutes, ensuring patients receive timely and necessary care.

Highmark Health’s commitment to improving prior authorization is further evidenced by its existing Gold Carding program, which offers expedited authorizations for clinicians adhering to evidence-based guidelines. The collaboration with Abridge builds upon these efforts, pushing the boundaries of efficiency through AI. Highmark plans to initially test the new prior authorization tool with specific procedures within a specialty to ensure accuracy before expanding its deployment.
