Hangzhou’s Liangzhu: China’s Thriving AI Innovation Hub Attracts Coders and Startups

TLDR: Liangzhu, a quiet suburb in Hangzhou, China, has rapidly transformed into a vibrant ‘coder village’ and a central hub for China’s burgeoning artificial intelligence industry. Attracting young tech talent and aspiring entrepreneurs, the area is fueled by low rents, proximity to tech giants like Alibaba and DeepSeek, and significant government subsidies and tax breaks. Led by figures like Felix Tao, a former Facebook and Alibaba employee, this community of ‘villagers’ is actively developing new AI companies, positioning Hangzhou as a key contender in the global AI race against Silicon Valley.

Hangzhou, China – A quiet suburb in the southern Chinese city of Hangzhou, Liangzhu, is rapidly emerging as the epicenter of China’s latest artificial intelligence boom. This area has become a magnet for young, ambitious coders and tech entrepreneurs, transforming into what many affectionately call a ‘coder village.’

The scene in Liangzhu often mirrors that of Silicon Valley: aspiring tech founders gather in backyards, pitching ideas to investors in kitchens, while others work on laptops in coffee shops, fueled by strawberry frappuccinos. Felix Tao, 36, a former employee of both Facebook and Alibaba, is a central figure in this ecosystem. His home has become a de facto hub for coders, many in their twenties and thirties, who have settled in Liangzhu. These ‘villagers’ spend their days writing code and their nights gaming together, all with the shared ambition of leveraging AI to launch their own companies.

Tao, who helped establish an AI research lab at Alibaba before founding his own company, Mindverse, in 2022, frequently hosts events where startup founders present their concepts. He notes, ‘People come here to explore their own possibilities,’ with virtually all these possibilities revolving around artificial intelligence.

Hangzhou’s rise as an AI powerhouse is not accidental. For the past decade, provincial and local governments have actively fostered this growth by offering substantial subsidies and tax breaks to new companies, a policy that has successfully incubated hundreds of startups. This supportive environment, coupled with low rents and the presence of established tech giants like Alibaba and DeepSeek, makes Liangzhu an attractive destination for tech talent. On weekends, programmers are flown in from major cities like Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen, often ending up at Tao’s gatherings.

The city has already given birth to significant tech powerhouses, including Alibaba, NetEase, and Hikvision, in addition to the rapidly rising DeepSeek. DeepSeek, whose founder is an alumnus of Hangzhou’s Zhejiang University, made waves in January by releasing an AI system that reportedly cost only a fraction of what Silicon Valley companies spent on similar developments. Graduates from Zhejiang University are now highly sought after by Chinese tech firms, and the poaching of a core DeepSeek team member by electronics giant Xiaomi was closely followed by Chinese media.

Many engineers in Liangzhu are biding their time, waiting for non-compete agreements from larger companies like ByteDance to expire, before launching their own ventures. DeepSeek is recognized as one of the ‘six tigers of Hangzhou,’ a moniker given by Chinese media to the city’s leading AI and robotics startups. As China intensifies its competition with the United States for technological supremacy, Hangzhou stands firmly at the heart of this AI frenzy.
