Designed for both students and professionals, these tools are part of Grammarly’s broader vision to integrate intelligent assistance directly into the writing process, fostering AI literacy and improving communication across different tiers of its service.
SAN FRANCISCO – August 18, 2025 – Grammarly, a leading AI assistant for communication and productivity, today announced a significant expansion of its offerings with the launch of eight specialized AI agents and an innovative AI-native writing surface, Grammarly Docs. This strategic move is set to revolutionize how students and professionals approach writing tasks, providing context-aware and automated assistance directly within their workflow.
The newly introduced AI agents are designed to address a wide array of writing needs. Key functionalities include predicting reader reactions, paraphrasing with precise tone control, AI grading based on rubrics, expert review, citation finding, plagiarism checking, and AI text detection. These agents are rolling out within Grammarly Docs, a new writing environment that embeds intelligent assistance seamlessly into the creation process. This marks the initial phase of a redesigned Grammarly platform built on ‘agentic AI,’ aiming to deliver these capabilities wherever users write.
Luke Behnke, Grammarly’s Vice President of Product Management, emphasized the company’s vision in an interview, stating, “We think there’s still a gap today in the way people and AI are working together to get things done. We felt it was important to break these up into what we’re calling agents — who show up at the right time, in the right context, and bring help to people in the moment.”
For students, the new agents offer comprehensive and responsible AI support from the first draft to final submission. Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education, highlighted the educational benefits: “Students today need AI that enhances their capabilities without undermining their learning. Grammarly’s new agents fill this gap, acting as real partners that guide students to produce better work while ensuring they develop real skills that will serve them throughout their careers. By teaching students how to work effectively with AI now, we’re preparing them for a workplace where AI literacy will be essential.” A notable agent for students is the AI-grader, which can evaluate work against uploaded rubrics, providing detailed feedback and potentially pulling information about the professor or class from university data.
Professionals are also set to benefit significantly. Behnke noted that the tone of voice agent has seen strong adoption among professionals, allowing them to paste their own writing to build a consistent personal voice. The suite aims to refine communication for impact and clarity, complementing Grammarly’s existing proofreading tools.

Beyond the specialized agents, Grammarly is also integrating an AI chat assistant for brainstorming, summarizing, and generating suggestions, similar to other AI chatbots but uniquely embedded within the writing interface. This comprehensive lean into AI agents and the new AI-enabled writing surface signifies a transformative journey for Grammarly, with discussions about potential rebranding of the parent company already underway. The new features will be available across Grammarly’s free, Pro, Enterprise, and Education tiers.
