TLDR: Google is progressively phasing out its long-standing Google Assistant, replacing it with the AI-powered Gemini across most Android phones and other connected devices throughout 2025. This transition marks a significant platform shift towards generative AI, promising more intuitive and integrated user interactions, though some privacy concerns have been raised regarding Gemini’s deep integration with core phone applications.
Google is embarking on a significant technological transition, announcing the gradual replacement of its established Google Assistant with the advanced AI model, Gemini, across a wide array of devices throughout 2025. This strategic move is described by Google as a ‘platform shift,’ driven by the transformative capabilities of generative AI, aiming to redefine how users interact with their technology.
The rollout will see Gemini becoming the default assistant on most Android phones later in 2025, with users receiving upgrade prompts and specific dates for the transition. The classic Google Assistant, launched in 2016, will eventually become inaccessible on most mobile devices and will no longer be available for new downloads on mobile app stores. This change extends beyond smartphones, impacting tablets, cars, headphones, watches, and even smart home devices like speakers, displays, and TVs.
Millions of users have already made the switch to Gemini, particularly those with newer Android phones from brands like Pixel, Samsung, OnePlus, and Motorola, where Gemini is already the default. Google’s vision for Gemini is an assistant that is ‘personal to you, and aware of the world around you. It should be able to interact with the apps and services you already use. And it should make you more productive, more creative and a bit more curious.’
Gemini is expected to offer enhanced capabilities, including more natural conversations and the ability to manage complex household tasks through natural language commands, such as controlling smart devices, creating calendars, and handling lists or timers. Features like Astra-powered video and screen-sharing are also anticipated to be integrated. For smart home ecosystems, Gemini is slated to power Google’s platform, replacing Assistant on existing Nest speakers and displays starting October 2025, initially through an early preview.

However, the transition is not without its complexities. Devices running Android 9 or earlier with less than 2GB of RAM are expected to retain the existing Google Assistant experience. Furthermore, the deeper integration of Gemini has sparked privacy discussions. Reports indicate that starting July 7, 2025, Gemini AI will interact directly with core applications such as Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and Tools, potentially overriding previous user settings. This has led to user concerns about the AI’s ability to read or send messages without explicit knowledge, with instructions for disabling these features described as ‘sparse and ambiguous.’ Google states Gemini will ‘help’ with these apps, which could encompass automated reading, suggested responses, automatic command execution, and context capture for personalized profiling.
