Google Unveils ‘Mixboard’: An AI-Powered Mood Board App to Transform Creative Visualization

TLDR: Google has launched ‘Mixboard,’ an experimental AI-powered mood board application, now in public beta in the U.S. Designed to rival platforms like Pinterest, Mixboard allows users to generate images and collages from text prompts, leveraging Google’s Gemini 2.5 Flash and Nano Banana AI models for dynamic creative exploration and refinement.

Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has officially introduced ‘Mixboard,’ an innovative AI-powered mood board application, marking its latest foray into generative AI tools. Launched on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Mixboard is currently available as a public beta in the United States through Google Labs (labs.google/mixboard), with a dedicated Discord community established for early adopters to provide feedback.

Mixboard is designed to revolutionize how users brainstorm, design, and visualize ideas. Unlike traditional mood board platforms that primarily rely on users curating and uploading existing images, Mixboard empowers individuals to start from scratch using simple text prompts. Google’s advanced AI then generates images, collages, and editable boards that can be further refined, combined, or reimagined.

At the core of Mixboard’s capabilities are Google’s powerful AI models. The application utilizes the Google Gemini 2.5 Flash model for initial AI generation and leverages the cutting-edge Nano Banana image editing model for complex edits and realistic visual output. The Nano Banana model, launched in August, has been praised for its ability to handle intricate modifications and produce high-quality visuals.

This new offering positions Google as a direct competitor to established visual inspiration platforms like Pinterest, as well as other digital design tools such as FigJam and Adobe’s FireFly Board. Google aims to differentiate Mixboard through its deep integration of AI, making professional-grade visualization tools accessible to a broader audience.

Mixboard caters to a wide array of creative needs, from personal projects like home décor planning and event organization to professional tasks such as branding, design brainstorming, presentations, and social media content creation. Users can either begin with pre-templated boards or generate entirely new visuals by describing their vision, for example, ‘show me cups, bowls and plates in Memphis style’ or ‘plan an autumn party in my living room.’

The app also features dynamic editing capabilities, allowing users to request small changes, combine images, or generate new versions of ideas with one-click options like ‘regenerate’ and ‘more like this.’ Furthermore, Mixboard can generate descriptive text based on the visual context of images on the board, enhancing its utility for various creative outputs.

The launch of Mixboard follows a period of significant momentum for Google’s AI initiatives, notably after its Gemini AI app recently surpassed ChatGPT in popularity on the U.S. App Store, reaching the number one spot. This strategic move underscores Google’s commitment to expanding its suite of AI-driven creative applications and making artificial intelligence more accessible for everyday use.
