TLDR: Google is set to invest $15 billion over five years (2026-2030) to establish its largest AI data center hub outside the United States in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This multi-faceted project, developed in collaboration with partners like AdaniConneX and Airtel, will include gigawatt-scale data center operations, a robust subsea cable network, and green energy infrastructure to support advanced AI workloads and India’s digital transformation.
NEW DELHI, India – October 14, 2025 – Google today announced a monumental investment of approximately $15 billion (USD) over the next five years (2026-2030) to establish its first and largest Artificial Intelligence (AI) hub in India, located in Visakhapatnam (Vizag), Andhra Pradesh. This strategic move marks Google’s most significant investment in India to date and is poised to accelerate the nation’s AI-driven transformation across various sectors.
The announcement was made at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi, a pre-event to the India-AI Impact Summit 2026, with key dignitaries in attendance. These included Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology; Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs; Shri Nara Chandrababu Naidu, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh; Shri Nara Lokesh, Hon’ble Minister for Information Technology, Electronics and Communications, RTG and HRD; and Mr. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.
The Visakhapatnam AI hub is envisioned as a multi-faceted project, deploying Google’s full AI stack to provide powerful AI infrastructure, substantial data center capacity, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber-optic network. This initiative aligns directly with the Indian Government’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, which aims to accelerate the expansion of AI-driven services across the country.
In a landmark partnership, Google is collaborating with Adani Enterprises, through its joint venture company AdaniConneX, and Bharti Airtel to bring this vision to fruition. The collaboration with AdaniConneX will focus on developing purpose-built AI data center infrastructure in Visakhapatnam, adding significant compute capacity. This will include gigawatt-scale data center operations, supported by a robust subsea cable network and clean energy infrastructure, designed to handle the most demanding AI workloads.
Mr. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “The Adani Group is proud to partner with Google on this historic project that will define the future of India’s digital landscape. This is more than just an investment in infrastructure. It is an investment in the soul of a rising nation.” He further added that this partnership is a testament to their shared vision of nation-building and commitment to empowering every Indian with 21st-century tools, positioning Visakhapatnam as a global technology destination.
Beyond data centers, the investment includes the construction of a new international subsea gateway in Visakhapatnam, featuring multiple international subsea cables. This will connect to Google’s extensive global terrestrial and subsea cable network, establishing Visakhapatnam as a critical AI and connectivity hub not just for India, but for the world. This gateway will help meet India’s surging digital demands and provide crucial route diversity to complement existing subsea cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai.
Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, Hon’ble IT Minister, thanked Google for the $15 billion announcement, highlighting that this digital infrastructure will significantly contribute to the goals of India’s AI mission. He also acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for leveraging technology in all aspects of life and urged the industry to support re-skilling and upskilling IT professionals, a major part of Google’s agenda.
According to an analysis by Access Partnership, commissioned by Google, the AI hub is projected to generate at least $15 billion (USD) in American gross domestic product (GDP) over five years (2026-2030) due to new economic activity from increased cloud and AI adoption, as well as the involvement of American talent and resources. This initiative is expected to create substantial economic and societal opportunities for both India and the United States, pioneering a generational shift in AI capability.
Mr. Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, emphasized the importance of the investment: “To unlock India’s massive potential in the AI age, we are investing in the Google AI hub, which will provide the critical foundation to drive growth and enable businesses, researchers, and creators to build and scale with AI.” The project also underscores both companies’ commitment to sustainability, with co-investment in new transmission lines, clean energy generation, and innovative energy storage systems in Andhra Pradesh, which will support the data center’s operations and enhance India’s electricity grid.
