TLDR: Google Photos has commenced the gradual rollout of its highly anticipated ‘Remix’ AI feature, enabling users to transform their images into various artistic styles such as anime, comic book, sketch, and 3D animation. This generative AI tool, part of Google’s ongoing enhancements to its Gemini AI systems, is being deployed to mobile app users, offering a free and integrated method for creative photo editing, complete with digital watermarks for transparency.
Google Photos has begun rolling out its innovative new ‘Remix’ feature, a generative AI tool designed to transform ordinary photographs into a variety of artistic styles. The rollout, which commenced on August 13, 2025, is a gradual, server-side update, meaning it will become available to users progressively across the globe. This development is a testament to Google’s continuous efforts in enhancing its Gemini AI systems and integrating advanced AI capabilities into its popular services.
The ‘Remix’ feature allows users to apply four distinct cartoony art styles to their images: anime, comic book, sketch, and a style reminiscent of 3D animation seen in Pixar or DreamWorks movies. This functionality is exclusively available within the Google Photos mobile application. Users can access the feature by tapping the ‘+’ sign in the top-right corner of the app and selecting ‘Remix’ from the ‘Create’ listings. Once a photo is chosen and a style is selected, the AI processes the image, and users have the option to ‘Regenerate’ if the initial outcome isn’t satisfactory.
This new offering builds on the growing trend of AI-powered image transformation tools, which have gained significant traction on social media platforms, often facilitated by AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Unlike many third-party alternatives that may require subscriptions or multiple steps of uploading and downloading, Google Photos integrates ‘Remix’ directly into the app, making it a seamless and free experience for users.
Google has also emphasized its commitment to responsible AI deployment and transparency. All images generated using the ‘Remix’ feature will include an invisible SynthID digital watermark. Additionally, videos created with related generative AI tools, such as the new photo-to-video feature, will also bear a visual watermark, similar to those seen in Gemini-generated content. The company acknowledges that the ‘Remix’ feature is ‘experimental’ and that ‘generated images may not perfectly match the original photo,’ indicating ongoing refinement.

The ‘Remix’ feature is part of a broader initiative to centralize creative tools within Google Photos, with a new ‘Create’ tab expected to roll out more widely. This tab will serve as a hub for various creation tools, including animations, cinematic photos, collages, highlight videos, and the recently introduced photo-to-video conversion, further solidifying Google Photos’ position as a comprehensive photo and video editing platform.
