TLDR: Google has launched a new experimental AI feature called “Web Guide” to improve search result organization and relevance. Powered by a customized version of Gemini AI, this feature aims to help users find information more easily by grouping related web links and providing summaries, especially for complex queries. It is currently available to a limited number of users through Search Labs.
Google has rolled out an innovative new artificial intelligence (AI) feature for its search engine, dubbed “Web Guide,” designed to combat irrelevant search results and enhance user experience. This experimental feature, currently accessible to a select group of users via Google Search Labs, leverages a customized version of Google’s Gemini AI model to intelligently organize search results. The primary goal of Web Guide is to make it simpler for users to locate desired information by filtering and grouping web pages based on their relevance to specific queries.
Unlike traditional search algorithms that present a flat list of results, Web Guide employs a “query fan-out technique,” similar to Google’s AI Mode. This technique allows the AI to break down complex or multi-part search queries into smaller, related topics and conduct multiple concurrent searches. The results are then presented in organized sections, each with a short introductory summary and a collection of relevant links. For instance, in a demo for “how to solo travel in Japan,” the Web Guide provided distinct sections for comprehensive guides, personal experiences, and safety recommendations.
Each section initially displays a few links, with an option to “load more” content. This approach aims to provide curated answers while still directing traffic to websites, addressing concerns that AI Overviews might reduce user clicks on external links. While AI Overviews and AI Mode often dominate the top half of the search page, Web Guide is intended to integrate AI-curated answers within the familiar structure of Search, maintaining the presence of traditional “blue links.”

Currently, Web Guide is an opt-in feature available under the “Web” tab in Search. Google has indicated plans to expand this feature to other parts of Search, including the “All” tab, over time, reflecting its ongoing commitment to deeply integrate AI into everyday tools to improve search accuracy and user experience. The feature is reported to be available primarily in the US at present.
