Google Expands AI Overviews to Discover Feed on Mobile Apps

TLDR: Google has officially begun rolling out AI-generated summaries, known as AI Overviews, into its personalized Discover feed on the Google app for iOS and Android. This integration aims to provide users with quick, summarized information, though it raises ongoing concerns among publishers regarding potential impacts on website traffic.

Google is significantly expanding the reach of its artificial intelligence capabilities by integrating AI Overviews directly into the Discover feed on its mobile application for both iOS and Android devices. This move, confirmed by Google to TechCrunch and observed by various users, marks another step in the tech giant’s strategy to deliver AI-powered summaries directly within its search ecosystem.

Previously, the Discover feed primarily displayed headlines and snippets from various news outlets, curated based on a user’s search history. With the new rollout, users will now encounter AI-generated summaries of news stories. These summaries are compiled from multiple sources, with publisher logos prominently displayed in the upper left-hand corner of the module, indicating the contributing publications. Tapping on these modules reveals a list of the different articles that informed the AI summary, allowing users to delve deeper into the original content.

While Google initially stated that AI Overviews in the Discover feed would primarily focus on lifestyle topics such as sports and entertainment, reports indicate that AI-generated summaries for hard news, including politics, have also been observed. The feature is currently rolling out in the U.S., with potential plans for global expansion in the future.

This integration into the Discover feed follows the earlier introduction of AI Overviews at the top of Google Search results and within the ‘People Also Ask’ (PAA) sections. During Google I/O 2025, the company announced that its AI Overviews now reach over 1.5 billion people monthly, underscoring the rapid adoption and expansion of its generative AI features. More recently, Google also launched ‘AI Mode,’ an alternative search experience powered by its Gemini AI model, offering chatbot-style answers to queries.

However, the increasing prevalence of AI-generated content within Google’s platforms continues to be a point of contention for news publishers. Many media organizations have reported significant declines in organic search traffic since the initial launch of AI Overviews. A 2025 analysis by SimilarWeb, for instance, indicated a 26 percent decrease in organic search traffic for publishers. The concern stems from the fact that AI summaries provide users with immediate answers, potentially reducing the need to click through to original source websites, thereby impacting publisher revenue and reach. Despite these concerns, Google maintains that its generative AI features are not negatively impacting publisher traffic. Each AI summary in the Discover feed also includes a disclaimer, stating that the content is ‘generated with AI, which can make mistakes.’
