A new report from Google Cloud, titled ‘ROI of AI in Healthcare and Life Sciences,’ underscores a pivotal shift in the adoption of generative artificial intelligence within the healthcare sector. Released on October 17, 2025, the study indicates that generative AI is no longer confined to pilot programs and basic productivity enhancements but is now delivering tangible and measurable returns across various healthcare functions. The findings are based on a comprehensive global survey of more than 600 senior leaders in healthcare and life sciences.
The report highlights a significant transition towards ‘agentic AI’ systems, which are defined as specialized models equipped with context and objectives, capable of planning, reasoning, and executing actions under human oversight. Aashima Gupta, Google Cloud’s Global Director for Healthcare Solutions, emphasized the transformative potential of these agents, stating, ‘They are enabling organizations to achieve higher precision and automation across care and research.’
According to the report, a striking 90% of healthcare executives are already witnessing positive returns on investment from their generative AI deployments. This widespread success is driving substantial future investments, with nearly half of the surveyed organizations planning to allocate over 50% of their upcoming AI budgets to agentic systems. Currently, 44% of executives in these industries have AI agents actively in production, signaling a clear move from experimentation to scaled deployment.
The benefits realized from generative AI are diverse and impactful. Organizations are reporting faster documentation processes, improved patient satisfaction, and reduced time to treatment. The integrated agentic ecosystem envisioned by Google Cloud spans the entire care continuum, from generating clinical notes and interpreting radiology scans to accelerating drug discovery and genomics research. Through its Vertex AI and Gemini models, Google Cloud is enabling organizations to build sophisticated multi-agent systems that can reason across vast datasets, including electronic health records, supply chains, and research data, all while adhering to strict compliance standards.
