TLDR: Google Cloud and Color Health have partnered to introduce an AI agent, Color Assistant, aimed at streamlining and expanding access to breast cancer screening. This philanthropic initiative, supported by Google.org, leverages generative AI to assist women aged 40 and above, or those at elevated risk, with eligibility checks, appointment scheduling, and follow-up coordination for mammograms, with a goal to bring tens of thousands more women into screening by December 31, 2025.
In a significant move to combat breast cancer, Google Cloud and Color Health announced on October 16, 2025, the launch of a philanthropic program featuring an advanced AI agent, Color Assistant. This initiative is designed to simplify and accelerate access to crucial mammogram screenings, aiming to significantly increase screening rates among eligible women.
The Color Assistant, built on Google Cloud’s generative AI technology, specifically utilizing Gemini 2.5 models and an Agent Development Kit, is deployed on Vertex AI’s Agent Engine for robust security and performance. Its primary function is to guide individuals through the breast cancer screening process, from initial eligibility assessment to scheduling appointments and coordinating follow-up care. The AI agent can answer questions, book mammograms, and ensure seamless coordination with Color Medical’s 50-state network of clinicians.
The program targets women aged 40 and older, as well as those identified with elevated risk factors. The initiative is supported by Google.org and is set to run through December 31, 2025, with an ambitious goal of facilitating screenings for tens of thousands more women this year.
Early detection is paramount in breast cancer care, with localized disease boasting a five-year survival rate exceeding 99%, according to the American Cancer Society. Despite this, a considerable portion of women remain unscreened. Recent CDC data indicates that approximately 80% of women aged 50-74 are up-to-date on screenings, leaving about one in five not current. Screening rates are even lower for women aged 40-49. Compounding this challenge, the incidence of breast cancer in younger women has been on an upward trend, and those diagnosed under 40 face a roughly 40% higher mortality rate compared to older diagnosed individuals.
Color Assistant addresses these critical gaps by collecting necessary information for mammogram eligibility, triggering a clinician review, and then assisting with appointment scheduling. Depending on individual risk and guidelines, Color clinicians may also order additional imaging such as ultrasound or MRI. They are responsible for delivering results and coordinating subsequent steps, including communication with patients’ existing healthcare providers.
