Google Asserts AI Overviews Maintain Web Traffic Stability Amid Industry Concerns

TLDR: Google maintains that its AI Overviews feature has not negatively impacted overall web traffic, asserting that organic click volume remains stable and click quality has improved, despite third-party studies suggesting significant drops in website visits.

Google has addressed mounting concerns from publishers and analysts regarding the impact of its new AI Overviews feature on web traffic, firmly stating that the total organic click volume from Google Search to websites remains ‘relatively stable year-over-year.’ Liz Reid, Google’s Head of Search, emphasized that the company continues to deliver billions of clicks daily and that the introduction of generative AI in Search has not diminished its role in directing users to publishers. Google contends that while user interaction patterns have evolved, the overall number of clicks sent to websites has not significantly declined. Furthermore, Reid noted an improvement in ‘click quality,’ suggesting users are less likely to immediately return to search results after clicking a link, indicating more satisfying outcomes from their visits. The company also claims that AI Overviews have led to more detailed user queries and an increased number of visible links per search, which they believe offsets concerns about content being directly surfaced on the results page.

This stance comes in direct response to numerous third-party reports and studies that suggest a different reality. For instance, a study by BrightEdge indicated that average click-through rates for the top search result dropped by over 30% following the rollout of AI Overviews. Similarly, a report from Search Engine Land showed even greater visibility loss for lower-positioned results. More recently, a Pew Research Center survey found that users who encountered an AI Overview clicked on a website link only 8% of the time, compared to 15% for those who saw only standard search results, with only 1% clicking citation links within the AI summaries. These studies collectively suggest that AI-generated summaries reduce the need for users to visit external sites, often leading them to end their browsing sessions directly on the search results page.

Media companies and analysts have voiced significant alarm over the potential erosion of the open web. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, among others, has warned that generative AI tools like AI Overviews could ‘kill’ the internet by summarizing content without driving traffic back to the source, thereby disincentivizing original content creation. In response, some content providers are exploring options to block AI bots or demand compensation for the use of their content in AI training data or summaries. Google, however, has challenged the accuracy of these external claims, labeling the findings as ‘flawed’ due to perceived limitations in data sets, isolated examples, or reliance on outdated traffic patterns that may not accurately reflect user behavior since the AI Overviews were launched.
