Google Ads Enhances Search Campaigns with New AI-Powered ‘Locations of Interest’ Targeting

TLDR: Google Ads has officially rolled out a new ‘Locations of Interest’ targeting feature for its AI Max for Search campaigns. This innovative capability allows advertisers to target users based on their demonstrated interest in specific geographic locations, regardless of their current physical presence. It combines intent signals with traditional geo-filters, offering a more refined approach to reach audiences such as travelers or future movers, and is exclusively available within AI Max for Search.

Google Ads has introduced a significant enhancement to its AI Max for Search campaigns with the official rollout of ‘Locations of Interest’ targeting. This new feature, which became available in early August 2025, allows advertisers to serve ads to users who have shown a clear interest in a particular geographic location, even if they are not physically present there. This marks a strategic evolution in targeting capabilities, moving beyond traditional geo-fencing to incorporate user intent signals.

The ‘Locations of Interest’ functionality is exclusively integrated within AI Max for Search campaigns, Google’s suite of AI-powered features designed to optimize standard Search campaigns for increased conversions and expanded reach. This integration underscores Google’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence to provide more precise and effective advertising solutions.

Advertisers can implement this new targeting option by accessing an AI Max for Search ad group, navigating to ‘Locations,’ and selecting the ‘Interest’ setting. This provides a nuanced method to connect with specific audiences, such as individuals researching travel destinations, those planning a relocation, or anyone demonstrating a strong interest in a particular market, without the need to create duplicate campaigns for different geographical considerations.

According to reports, the ‘Locations of Interest’ filter is applied across all campaign signals, including keywords, landing pages, and assets. This means an ad impression will only be served if the user has exhibited interest in the specified locations, irrespective of which signal triggered the ad match. This ensures a high degree of relevance for the ads displayed.

The introduction of ‘Locations of Interest’ targeting aligns with Google’s broader strategy to centralize advanced targeting and creative tools within AI Max. Earlier pilots for ‘Locations of Interest’ outside of AI Max for Search campaigns are concluding, with the functionality now consolidated within the AI Max framework. Full API support for AI Max for Search campaigns, including this new targeting feature, is planned for Google Ads API v21, expected in August 2025, further enabling developers and advertisers to manage these advanced capabilities programmatically.
