Hyderabad, India – A significant four-day gathering of Comptrollers and Auditors General (CAGs) and senior audit officials from 29 countries concluded in Hyderabad, India, with a strong commitment to advancing audit practices through technology. The international meeting, hosted by India, saw participating nations pledge a renewed focus on cybersecurity audits and the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into their operational frameworks. This initiative also includes the adoption of remote auditing techniques leveraging Internet of Things (IoT) technologies.
The annual meeting, organized under the aegis of the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions (INTOSAI), resulted in the adoption of a comprehensive work plan for 2026-28. This plan specifically prioritizes cybersecurity audits and the use of IoT for remote audits, while also reinforcing commitments to research, capacity building, and the development of new audit knowledge.
India, recognized as one of the most technologically advanced audit institutions globally, played a pivotal role in the summit. The country launched a nine-month AI/ML certification program designed to train auditors from other nations, showcasing its leadership in technological adoption for performance and compliance audits. Furthermore, India highlighted its PM GatiShakti initiative, demonstrating the transformative impact of AI, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and big data in infrastructure project monitoring.
A key announcement from the summit was the collaboration between the Comptroller and Auditor General of India and IIT Madras to develop a Large Language Model (LLM) specifically trained on audit and inspection reports. This innovative tool is expected to benefit not only India but also other participating countries in enhancing audit efficiency and insight.
CAG K Sanjay Murthy emphasized the importance of international cooperation in navigating the digital era. He stated, “Through shared expertise and continued cooperation, Intosai can equip SAIs (supreme audit institutions) worldwide to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing digital era.” India currently leads both the IT Audit Working Group and the Knowledge Sharing Committee within INTOSAI, playing a crucial role in shaping global strategies for technology integration in public auditing.
