GitLab Unveils Duo Agent Platform in Public Beta, Revolutionizing AI-Powered Developer Collaboration

TLDR: GitLab has launched the public beta of its Duo Agent Platform, a new DevSecOps orchestration platform designed to foster asynchronous collaboration between human developers and specialized AI agents. This initiative aims to streamline software development workflows, enhance productivity, and integrate AI more deeply into the entire software development lifecycle.

SAN FRANCISCO – July 17, 2025 – GitLab Inc., a leading provider of the most comprehensive, intelligent DevSecOps platform, today announced the public beta launch of its highly anticipated GitLab Duo Agent Platform. This innovative platform is set to transform software development by establishing an intelligent orchestration layer that facilitates seamless, asynchronous collaboration between human developers and specialized AI agents.

The Duo Agent Platform is designed to move software development beyond isolated, linear processes into dynamic, multi-agent collaboration. By leveraging GitLab’s unique position as the system of record for the entire software development lifecycle, the platform provides AI agents with comprehensive project context, enabling them to make informed decisions that align with organizational standards and project goals.

Key capabilities available in the public beta for GitLab Premium and Ultimate customers include:

Software Development Flow: This orchestrated multi-agent workflow gathers extensive context, clarifies ambiguities with developers, and executes strategic plans to make precise changes to codebases and repositories. It utilizes the project structure, codebase, history, and additional context like GitLab issues or merge requests to amplify developer productivity.

GitLab Duo Agentic Chat in IDE: This feature transforms the traditional chat experience into an active development partner directly within integrated development environments (IDEs). It supports more sophisticated interactions, iterative feedback, slash commands, and personalization through custom rules, enabling developers to delegate tasks more effectively.

GitLab Duo Agentic Chat in Web UI: Provides direct access to the agentic chat experience within the GitLab web interface.

Extensive IDE Support: The platform supports popular JetBrains IDEs, including IntelliJ, PyCharm, GoLand, and WebStorm, as well as the GitLab VS Code extension.

Model Context Protocol (MCP) Client Support: Enables GitLab Duo Agentic Chat to connect to remote and local MCP servers, expanding the agents’ ability to interact with systems beyond GitLab.

Bill Staples, CEO at GitLab, emphasized the platform’s significance, stating, “Today marks a pivotal moment in software development as we introduce the public beta of the GitLab Duo Agent Platform, the first DevSecOps orchestration platform designed to unlock asynchronous collaboration between developers and AI agents. GitLab Duo Agent Platform isn’t just another AI tool; it’s a fundamental reimagining of software development from isolated, linear processes into dynamic, intelligent collaboration.”

Bal Kang, Engineering Platform Lead at NatWest, provided an early endorsement, noting, “GitLab Duo Agent Platform enhances our development workflow with AI that truly understands our codebase and our organization. Having GitLab Duo AI agents embedded in our system of record for code, tests, CI/CD, and the entire software development lifecycle boosts productivity, velocity, and efficiency. The agents have become true collaborators to our teams, and their ability to understand intent, break down problems, and take action frees our developers to tackle the exciting, innovative work they love.”
