GitHub has officially launched its Model Context Protocol (MCP) Registry, marking a pivotal step towards a more unified and efficient ecosystem for AI tool discovery and integration. Announced on September 22, 2025, this new registry provides developers with a central hub to find and integrate Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, thereby eliminating the complexities associated with scattered repositories and potential security vulnerabilities.
The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an extensible framework that enables AI agents and development tools to communicate seamlessly. It allows AI agents to access real-time context, interact with external environments, and integrate into existing systems, facilitating more sophisticated and connected workflows for software development teams. Previously, developers faced significant friction, with MCP servers dispersed across numerous unofficial registries, random repositories, and community threads, making discovery slow and integration cumbersome. This fragmentation also raised concerns about security and interoperability.
“If you’ve tried connecting AI agents to your development tools, you know the pain: MCP servers scattered across numerous registries, random repos, buried in community threads – making discovery slow and full of friction without a central place to go,” stated Toby Padilla, Principal Product Manager at GitHub. He added, “Meanwhile, MCP server creators are worn out from publishing to multiple places and answering the same setup questions again and again. The result is a fractured environment that’s fraught with potential security risks.”
The GitHub MCP Registry directly tackles these issues by centralizing the ecosystem. It launches with a curated selection of MCP servers from leading partners, including Figma, Postman, HashiCorp, and Dynatrace, while also opening avenues for community contributions. Key features of the registry include one-click installation within VS Code, the ability to filter and sort servers by GitHub community activity and star ratings for informed selection, and compatibility with both AI coding assistants and any MCP host. Each server is transparently linked to its GitHub repository, providing developers with comprehensive information on its functionality and usage.
Early partners are already demonstrating the registry’s value. Figma integrates design context into coding workflows, Postman connects APIs to development assistants, HashiCorp streamlines Terraform tasks, and Dynatrace delivers AI-powered observability directly within the IDE.

Furthermore, a Remote MCP Server has been introduced, granting AI agents access to repositories, issues, and pull requests, which is crucial for multi-step workflows. Looking ahead, GitHub is actively collaborating with Anthropic and the MCP Steering Committee on an open-source MCP registry. Once operational, servers published there will automatically synchronize with the existing GitHub Registry, ensuring unified discovery, verified metadata, and reduced duplication. This collaborative effort underscores a clear vision: to cultivate a healthier, interoperable AI ecosystem where finding the right tool is as straightforward as searching code online.
