Georgia Tech Engineering Course Integrates AI and Art, Championing Human Creativity

TLDR: A new engineering course at Georgia Institute of Technology, ‘Art and Generative AI,’ aims to reframe students’ understanding of artificial intelligence by emphasizing human creativity and the inherent value of imperfection in the artistic process. Taught by Associate Professor Francesco Fedele, the course challenges the perception of AI as fully humanlike, drawing inspiration from philosophical concepts to highlight the unique aspects of human expression.

Atlanta, GA – The Georgia Institute of Technology is pioneering an innovative approach to AI education with its new engineering course, ‘Art and Generative AI.’ Led by Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Francesco Fedele, the course is designed to bridge the gap between advanced artificial intelligence and the nuanced realm of human creativity, challenging students to look beyond AI’s mimicry capabilities.

The inspiration for the course stems from Fedele’s observation that many students perceive AI as ‘humanlike’ simply because it can perform complex tasks such as writing essays, solving advanced mathematics, or answering questions. However, Fedele notes that while AI can mimic human behavior, it fundamentally lacks ‘meaningful engagement with the world.’ This critical disconnect, he explains, was a primary driver for developing the curriculum.

Central to the course’s philosophy is the work of 20th-century German philosopher Martin Heidegger. Heidegger’s ideas, which emphasize humanity’s deep connection and presence in the world, and how meaning is found through action, care, and relationships, inform the course’s perspective on creativity. Human creativity and mastery, according to this view, emerge from an intuitive connection with the world. In stark contrast, modern AI simulates intelligence by processing symbols and patterns without genuine understanding or ‘care.’

‘In this course, we reject the illusion that machines fully master everything and put student expression first,’ Fedele stated. The curriculum actively values ‘uncertainty, mistakes and imperfection as essential to the creative process,’ fostering an environment where human ingenuity is paramount.

The ‘Art and Generative AI’ course delves into foundational concepts of AI, beginning with the perceptron, the first mathematical model of a neuron. Students then explore the Hopfield network, which simulates how the brain can recall a complete memory from partial input, such as remembering an entire song from just a few notes. The course also examines Hinton’s Boltzmann Machine, a generative model capable of ‘imagining’ new data.

Looking ahead, this vision extends beyond the traditional classroom setting. For the 2025-26 academic year, the course plans to introduce a new community-based learning collaboration with Atlanta’s vibrant art communities. This initiative will see local artists co-teaching alongside Professor Fedele, integrating artistic practice directly with AI concepts.

The course builds upon Fedele’s previous interdisciplinary work, including his 2018 class, ‘Art and Geometry,’ which he also co-taught with local artists. That earlier course explored the parallels between artistic movements like Picasso’s cubism, which depicted reality from multiple fractured perspectives, and scientific theories such as Einstein’s relativity, which posits that time and space are not absolute but interconnected elements of the same fabric.
