Genie AI’s Bold Vision: Replacing Traditional Law Firms with Advanced AI Solutions

TLDR: Rafie Faruq, co-founder and CEO of Genie AI, is leading a significant disruption in the legal industry by aiming to replace traditional law firms with AI-powered solutions. The company recently secured £13.3 million in Series A funding, primarily from Google Ventures, to further its mission of making legal services faster, more accessible, and more affordable for businesses.

Rafie Faruq, the visionary co-founder and CEO of Genie AI, is spearheading a transformative movement within the legal sector, with the ambitious goal of supplanting conventional law firms through cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Genie AI recently announced a substantial Series A funding round, securing £13.3 million. This significant investment was predominantly led by Google Ventures, with additional participation from Khosla Ventures, underscoring the confidence in Genie AI’s disruptive approach.

Faruq articulated his company’s unique stance, stating, ‘The good thing is, we don’t serve the legal industry, we replace it.’ This declaration highlights Genie AI’s commitment to fundamentally altering how legal services are delivered, moving beyond mere assistance for lawyers to a complete overhaul of the process. While many competitors focus on augmenting legal professionals’ tasks, Genie AI is directly addressing core industry challenges: the speed, accessibility, and affordability of legal services for businesses.

Genie AI’s platform leverages AI to draft, edit, and review legal agreements, a process that traditionally takes weeks but can now be completed in minutes. This efficiency is democratizing access to legal contracts for a broader range of companies. The company has already seen widespread adoption, with over 100,000 companies across more than 120 jurisdictions globally utilizing its solution to draft or review documents. Notably, 13% of these users are lawyers, law firms, and in-house legal departments.

Despite its AI-centric model, Genie AI plans to recruit lawyers, focusing on quality, trust, and security of AI outputs. Faruq emphasized, ‘Trust in AI platforms is a huge issue. They will focus on the quality of the AI outputs. A 60-page agreement, created in five minutes, has to be consistent, accurate and customised to the user’s needs.’ He added that the ‘real focus of Genie is now on quality, trust and security. It might not sound sexy but this is actually what lawyers want – AI that gives trustworthy results and recommendations.’

Genie AI is strategically targeting in-house legal departments and smaller firms, which are often more receptive to adopting new technologies and have greater flexibility regarding data security. Faruq noted that ‘Big law firms are not willing to take measures to enable their data to be used by AI. The percentage of their revenue that they invest in AI is still quite low.’

Founded in 2017 by Rafie Faruq and Nitish Mutha, Genie AI has also secured £1 million in government grants from Innovate UK. The company’s vision extends to becoming a global leading operating system for legal services, aiming to significantly transform the legal industry on a global scale and ensure that all businesses can access legal services at a reasonable price. The company is aggressively hiring for expansion, initially in the UK and the United States, with plans to extend across Europe and the Middle East.
