TLDR: A recent MBAUniverse.com survey of 235 faculty members in top Indian B-schools indicates a significant adoption of generative AI in education. While 51% of faculty foresee a positive impact on students, only 7% are expert users, highlighting a critical need for capacity-building programs to fully leverage AI’s potential in teaching, research, and curriculum development.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of management education in India, presenting both promising opportunities and significant challenges for business schools. A comprehensive survey conducted by MBAUniverse.com among 235 faculty members from leading Indian B-schools, including prestigious institutions like IIMs, IITs, ISB, XLRI, SPJIMR, MDI, and NMIMS, sheds light on the current state of AI integration.
The survey reveals that a notable 51% of faculty members are confident about the positive impact of AI adoption on business school students. This optimism is further supported by the expectation from over half of the faculty that AI’s role in teaching, curriculum design, and research will expand significantly within the next 12 months.
Despite the growing adoption, a considerable skill gap exists among educators. The study found that only 7% of faculty members identify as expert users of AI, while 55% are categorized as intermediate users. This disparity underscores a pressing need for structured capacity-building programs to equip faculty with the necessary expertise to effectively integrate AI into their pedagogical approaches.
Currently, faculty are primarily utilizing AI in research and teaching, with its application in curriculum development showing steady growth. Emerging areas for AI integration include administrative tasks and student assessment, indicating further avenues for structured support and development.
Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education, emphasized the transformative power of AI in education. He stated, “AI is transforming education and must be harnessed responsibly to strengthen both teaching and learning. It gives every student the freedom to ask questions and helps overcome barriers of language, background, or geography.”
