TLDR: New data from Adobe reveals a staggering 4,700% year-over-year surge in generative AI-powered traffic to U.S. retail websites by July 2025. This dramatic increase, based on over a trillion site visits and a survey of 5,000 consumers, indicates a fundamental shift in how Americans research and make online purchases. While conversion rates for AI-driven traffic still lag traditional sources, the gap is rapidly narrowing, and AI-driven revenue per visit has seen an 84% increase from January to July 2025.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the landscape of online retail, driving an unprecedented surge in traffic to U.S. shopping websites. According to a recent report from Adobe, based on an analysis of over one trillion site visits and a survey of 5,000 American consumers, generative AI-powered traffic to retail sites exploded by 4,700% year-over-year by July 2025. This significant shift underscores a fundamental change in consumer shopping habits and necessitates a re-evaluation of customer engagement strategies for retailers.
The growth trajectory of AI’s influence on retail has been remarkable. The initial material surge was observed during the 2024 holiday shopping season, with generative AI traffic increasing by 1,300% year-over-year between November 1 and December 31, 2024. On Cyber Monday alone, this figure reached an astounding 1,950%. The momentum continued into 2025, with January seeing an 1,100% growth, April reaching 3,100%, and culminating in the 4,700% surge by July 2025, compared to the same period the previous year.
Vivek Pandya, Director of Adobe Digital Insights, whose team meticulously tracks these digital commerce shifts, noted, “The uptick has been notable.” He further explained that “AI tools mean shoppers are becoming more informed and focusing on the most relevant retailers during the research phase.” The data indicates that 38% of consumers have already utilized generative AI for online shopping, with a significant portion using it for research (53%), product recommendations (40%), and finding deals (36%). This highlights AI’s emerging role as a primary research tool for consumers, altering the traditional path to purchase.
While generative AI-driven traffic still exhibits a lower conversion rate compared to non-AI sources, this gap is rapidly diminishing. In July 2025, AI traffic was 23% less likely to convert into a purchase, a substantial improvement from January 2025, when it was 49% less likely, and April 2025, when it was 38% less likely. This narrowing gap suggests increasing consumer comfort with completing transactions directly after an AI-powered interaction. Consequently, AI-driven revenue per visit has seen an 84% increase from January to July 2025. By July 2025, an AI-driven visit was worth only 27% less than a non-AI visit, a dramatic improvement from being worth 97% less in July 2024.

The mobile factor is also playing a crucial role in this transformation. In July 2025, 26% of generative AI traffic originated from mobile devices, an increase from 18% in January. This shift is significant as mobile platforms typically drive more impulse purchases, potentially further boosting AI’s impact on retail sales. As generative AI continues to evolve and integrate deeper into the shopping journey, retailers are compelled to adapt their strategies to engage with an increasingly AI-informed consumer base.
