TLDR: Generative AI is emerging as a powerful tool to help customers significantly lower their carbon footprints, particularly within the telecom industry. New initiatives are leveraging GenAI to provide real-time carbon emission insights, recommend sustainable product choices, and incentivize eco-friendly behaviors, ultimately driving a collective reduction in environmental impact.
In a significant stride towards environmental sustainability, generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is being harnessed to empower customers in actively reducing their carbon footprints. A recent development, highlighted by the ‘Accelerating telecom’s sustainability journey – Phase II’ Catalyst, focuses on embedding real-time carbon emission insights directly into customer journeys across various channels within the telecom sector. This innovative approach aims to link emissions data to products, care systems, and catalogs, thereby enabling Communication Service Providers (CSPs) to guide customers towards more environmentally conscious decisions and reduce their overall climate impact.
For digital channels, the GenAI solution is designed to intelligently suggest lower-emission products, plans, and services based on individual user preferences. Crucially, it integrates comprehensive carbon metadata into product catalogs, allowing customers to easily compare the environmental impact of different products during the checkout process or when considering upgrades. In assisted channels, such as customer service interactions, agents are equipped with vital carbon data and intelligent recommendations. This empowers them to advise customers on sustainable choices, utilizing insights from monthly usage reports, charging patterns, and predictive emissions forecasts.
This initiative is particularly impactful for Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions, which represent indirect emissions occurring throughout an organization’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. These emissions can be substantial in the telecom industry, and GenAI offers a novel way to address them by influencing consumer behavior directly.
Beyond the immediate environmental benefits for customers, this approach also offers strategic advantages for CSPs. By positioning themselves as leaders in sustainability, telcos can significantly improve customer retention and attract new clientele, as studies indicate a strong consumer preference for brands committed to eco-friendly practices. Furthermore, encouraging the adoption of refurbished products through these solutions can lead to a reduction in CSPs’ electronic waste disposal costs. There’s also potential for new revenue streams through participation in carbon credit markets.
The Catalyst team is also exploring various methods to incentivize sustainable consumer behavior. This includes offering rewards for choosing energy-efficient products and services, promoting refurbished devices, providing optimization tips for existing services, and facilitating device take-back programs. These monetary and non-monetary incentives are designed to foster ongoing behavioral change and deepen customer engagement with sustainability efforts.
The application of GenAI in reducing Scope 3 emissions extends beyond telecom. For instance, Reckitt, a global consumer goods company, has collaborated with CO2 AI and Quantis to leverage GenAI in building a faster and more accurate carbon footprint assessment. Their proprietary technology uses GenAI to match relevant emission factors to over 300,000 data points collected in 2023, significantly increasing footprint accuracy by 75 times. This automation replaces a previously manual, time-consuming, and less precise categorization process. The detailed insights gained, such as identifying the top 25 substances contributing most to raw material and packaging emissions, directly inform decisions on ingredients and facilitate discussions with suppliers to lower their emissions, contributing to Reckitt’s target of a 50% Scope 3 reduction by 2030.
