TLDR: A recent report by Challenger, Gray & Christmas reveals that generative AI technology was responsible for over 10,000 job cuts in July alone, making it one of the top five reasons for job losses in 2025. Since 2023, more than 27,000 job cuts have been directly attributed to AI. The technology sector has been particularly impacted, with over 89,000 job cuts this year.
The U.S. job market is currently navigating significant pressures, with the rising adoption of artificial intelligence technologies emerging as a key factor in recent workforce reductions. According to a report released this week by the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, generative AI technology accounted for more than 10,000 job cuts in July alone. This places AI among the top five contributors to job losses anticipated in 2025.
Since 2023, the firm notes that over 27,000 job cuts have been directly linked to the advent of AI. The technology industry has been particularly hard hit, announcing more than 89,000 job cuts this year, marking a 36% increase from the previous year. Overall, companies have announced more than 806,000 private-sector job cuts through July, the highest number for this period since 2020.
Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President of Challenger, Gray & Christmas, stated, “The industry is being reshaped by the advancement of artificial intelligence and ongoing uncertainty surrounding work visas, which have contributed to workforce reductions.” He also added that “AI was cited for over 10,000 cuts last month, and tariff concerns have impacted nearly 6,000 jobs this year.”
The impact of AI on hiring is notably acute for younger workers. Data from Handshake, a career platform for Gen Z employees, indicates that job listings for entry-level corporate roles, traditionally available to recent college graduates, have declined by 15% over the past year. Conversely, the use of “AI” in job descriptions has surged by 400% in just two years, signaling a significant shift in required skills.

While AI is beginning to reshape the American workforce, other factors are also having an immediate impact on the labor market. More than 292,000 positions have been eliminated this year due to cuts linked to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative to reduce federal spending. Additionally, the retail sector has seen over 80,000 job cuts through July, a nearly 250% increase compared to the same period last year, attributed to ongoing economic challenges and potential declines in consumer spending. The confluence of rapid AI integration, governmental budget cuts, and trade-related impacts paints a complex and challenging picture for the future of the job market.
