Generative AI Adoption Surges in E-Discovery, Cloud Platforms Pave the Way

A new report highlights a significant shift in the e-discovery landscape, revealing that 37% of legal professionals are now actively incorporating generative artificial intelligence into their workflows. This adoption is particularly pronounced among those leveraging cloud-based solutions, signaling a clear direction for technological advancement within the legal sector.

The ‘Second Annual State of AI in eDiscovery Report,’ based on insights from 225 legal professionals across corporate legal teams and law firms, underscores a rapid acceleration in AI adoption. The report indicates that AI in e-discovery is now considered the most trusted AI application in the legal field, with a remarkable 95% of respondents expressing medium to high trust in AI for e-discovery tasks. This growing trust is reflected in an overall more positive sentiment towards AI, with a 38% increase in respondents who believe AI has a net positive impact on the legal industry.

Key drivers for this surge in adoption include enhanced team productivity, cited by 67% of survey participants, and the ability to free attorneys to focus on higher-value work, noted by 56%. Well-established AI use cases, such as privilege review, key document identification, and document summarization, are seeing the highest rates of adoption. For instance, more than 60% of respondents are currently using generative AI for document review automation, and nearly 60% are employing it for document summarization.

While AI adoption has nearly doubled compared to the previous year’s survey, familiarity with AI is still largely driven by indirect sources like social media and peer experiences. However, with nearly half of organizations actively evaluating AI solutions, the pace of adoption is expected to accelerate further throughout 2025.

The report also addresses evolving concerns. Fears surrounding job displacement have significantly declined, moving from the second-highest risk in 2023 to the lowest-ranked concern in 2024. Instead, practical implementation challenges such as reliability, accuracy, data security, and privacy remain the top risk concerns. There’s also an increasing focus on Return on Investment (ROI), as more legal professionals recognize AI’s potential to improve efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

According to Daniel Semelhack, senior project manager at e-discovery solutions provider ProSearch, the deployment of AI in 2025 will primarily impact review workflows. He noted, ‘It will be exciting to see how organizations leverage AI, and how they partner it alongside existing workflows and/or build new workflows from the ground up.’ The shift from skepticism to active experimentation highlights that the legal industry is moving beyond theoretical discussions to practical integration, with clients actively shaping the direction of AI tools and attorneys adopting AI into their daily routines in targeted, meaningful ways.
