Gartner, a leading research and advisory company, has unveiled strategic predictions indicating a profound transformation in the business landscape, with AI agents poised to disrupt the market by an estimated $58 billion by 2027. This disruption is expected as AI agents begin to challenge mainstream productivity tools, a sector that has seen little fundamental change in the last three decades.
According to Gartner’s insights for 2026 and beyond, the rapid evolution of generative AI (GenAI) and AI agents will diminish the importance of legacy formats and compatibility, thereby lowering barriers to entry for new competitors. This will foster a diverse array of vendors entering the market, intensifying competition. Daryl Plummer, VP, Distinguished Analyst, Gartner Fellow, and Chief of AI Research, emphasized that ‘The risks and opportunities of rapid technology change are increasingly affecting human behaviour and choices,’ urging CIOs and executive leaders to prioritize behavioral changes alongside technological advancements.
Beyond market disruption, Gartner’s predictions highlight several key shifts:
AI in Decision-Making: By 2027, it is projected that 50% of all business decisions will be either fully automated or significantly augmented by AI agents. This extends beyond routine tasks, with Gartner forecasting that by 2029, one in ten executive boards globally will leverage AI for assistance in making substantial business decisions.
Workforce Transformation: The integration of AI will also reshape hiring practices. Gartner predicts that by 2027, 75% of hiring processes will incorporate certifications and testing for workplace AI proficiency. This trend will be particularly pronounced in roles requiring strong information capture, retention, and synthesis skills, making AI proficiency increasingly correlated with higher salaries.
AI Project Challenges: Despite the immense potential, Gartner issues a cautionary note. More than 40% of agentic AI projects are expected to be canceled by the end of 2027. This high failure rate is attributed to surging costs, vague business outcomes, and immature risk management frameworks. Anushree Verma, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, noted that many current agentic AI projects are ‘early-stage experiments or proofs of concept that are mostly driven by hype and are often misapplied.’ The market is also experiencing ‘agent washing,’ where vendors rebrand existing technologies like RPA or chatbots as ‘agentic AI’ without offering true autonomous capabilities.
