Leading technology research firm Gartner has issued a significant forecast, predicting that inter-AI agent collaboration will become a reality across enterprise applications by 2027. This development is poised to revolutionize how organizations operate, collaborate, and compete, marking a pivotal shift in the landscape of artificial intelligence.
According to Gartner’s latest analysis, by 2027, approximately one-third of agentic AI deployments are expected to feature multi-agent ensembles working in tandem to address complex and evolving business needs. This transition necessitates the rigorous adoption of interoperability standards and new protocols to facilitate seamless machine-to-machine communications.
The maturation of agentic AI is described by Gartner in five strategic stages. Following ‘Embedded AI Assistants’ (2025) and ‘Task-Specific AI Agents’ (2026), the ‘Collaborative AI Agents’ stage in 2027 will see multiple AI agents collaborating within applications. This will then progress to ‘Ecosystems of AI Agents’ by 2028, where agents will extend across application boundaries, forming cohesive networks, and finally to ‘Democratised Agentic AI’ by 2029 and beyond.
Gartner forecasts a rapid acceleration in the integration of AI agents into business applications, with 40% of enterprise applications expected to integrate task-specific AI agents by 2026, a substantial increase from less than 5% currently. The financial implications are equally significant, with agentic AI projected to capture approximately 30% of all enterprise application software revenue by 2035, reaching over $450 billion, up from just 2% in 2025.
Anushree Verma, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner, emphasized this evolution, stating, “AI agents are evolving rapidly, progressing from basic assistants embedded in enterprise applications today to task-specific agents by 2026 and ultimately multiagent ecosystems by 2029.” Verma added that this development is transforming enterprise software from tools that merely enhance personal productivity into dynamic platforms for autonomous collaboration and workflow orchestration.
Despite the promising outlook, Gartner also highlights significant challenges. The firm warns that over 40% of agentic AI projects may falter by the end of 2027, citing soaring costs, unclear return on investment (ROI), and weak risk controls as primary reasons. A Gartner poll conducted in January 2025 among 3,412 webinar attendees revealed that while 19% of organizations had made major investments in Agentic AI, 42% made smaller investments, and a notable 31% were either undecided or waiting to observe market evolution.
Furthermore, Gartner cautions against ‘agent washing,’ where vendors rebrand traditional tools like AI assistants or robotic process automation (RPA) as Agentic AI without meaningful improvements. The research firm estimates that only about 130 vendors out of thousands currently offer true Agentic AI solutions.
In a related prediction, Gartner also noted that by 2027, 50% of organizations that expected to significantly reduce their customer service workforce will abandon these plans. This indicates a shift towards a hybrid approach where AI and human agents work in tandem, balancing technology with human empathy and understanding.
