TLDR: UAE’s G42, in collaboration with UAE Team Emirates-XRG and MET Helmets, has launched the world’s first cycling helmet designed using generative AI. Debuting at the Tour de France, this innovation aims to enhance performance and fan engagement through the ‘Helmetverse’ design challenge, despite mixed initial public reactions.
ABU DHABI – G42, a leading UAE-based AI and technology holding group, has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with elite cycling team UAE Team Emirates-XRG and helmet manufacturer MET Helmets, leading to the unveiling of the world’s first cycling helmet designed with generative artificial intelligence. The innovative headgear made its debut with UAE Team Emirates-XRG riders during the ongoing Tour de France, marking a significant step in integrating advanced AI into professional sports.
The generative AI technology developed by G42 was utilized to create the helmet’s unique livery, which intricately blends data, performance metrics, and creative design elements. The design visually interprets movement through airflow and negative space, reflecting how riders navigate diverse terrains from mountains to coastlines and cities. This initiative serves as a ‘proof of concept,’ demonstrating AI’s capability to extend beyond traditional data analysis into visual, creative, and high-speed applications within sports.
Andrew Jackson, Chief AI Officer at G42, emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership. ‘Collaborating with an elite team such as UAE Team Emirates-XRG offers a prime platform to demonstrate the transformative capabilities of AI, not only in enhancing athletic performance but also in pushing the boundaries of creativity, embodying the synergy between human and machine,’ Jackson stated. He further added that the ‘Helmetverse’ project exemplifies human-AI collaboration, providing a personal design platform that showcases AI at its most accessible and exciting.
Beyond the professional circuit, the launch includes a global community-driven initiative called ‘Helmetverse.’ This digital platform, accessible at helmetverse.ai, invites cycling enthusiasts worldwide to design their own AI-generated helmets using simple text prompts. Submissions for this unique design challenge are open until September 15, 2025. The winning design, selected from the top ten most-voted entries by a panel of judges from G42, UAE Team Emirates-XRG, and MET Helmets, will be produced and worn by the team during the 2026 UAE Tour, marking a historic first for fan-created AI design in a UCI WorldTour race.
Faheem Ahamed, Chief Marketing Officer at G42, highlighted the fan engagement aspect. ‘Helmetverse gives cycling fans a new way to get involved with UAE Team Emirates-XRG, the world’s best cycling team. It puts creativity at the forefront of innovation, bringing more people closer to the sport, with the chance to see their creation,’ Ahamed commented.
Mauro Gianetti, CEO and Team Principal of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, affirmed G42’s role as the team’s official AI partner, stating that both entities are actively exploring new frontiers for AI in cycling. This includes optimizing training regimens, refining race strategies, enhancing performance analysis, and deepening fan engagement.
