Future Engineers: Blending AI Expertise with Essential Human Capabilities for Career Longevity

TLDR: In an era of rapid technological advancement, engineers are increasingly urged to combine their proficiency in artificial intelligence with crucial human-centric abilities. Industry leaders emphasize that while technical skills like machine learning and data science are vital, qualities such as critical thinking, adaptability, communication, and emotional intelligence are equally essential for professionals to thrive alongside evolving AI systems and navigate a digitally driven global economy.

Coimbatore, July 5, 2025 – As the technological landscape continues its rapid evolution, a new imperative has emerged for engineers: the seamless integration of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) skills with indispensable human-centric capabilities. This dual proficiency is being highlighted as critical for maintaining relevance and fostering innovation in the workforce of tomorrow.

Addressing students at the award ceremony for Mechanical and Allied Engineering programmes at PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore, Ashish Ranjan, Chief Digital Officer at National Engineering Industries Ltd. (NBC Bearings), underscored this evolving requirement. Ranjan stated that future engineers must equip themselves with both robust technical skills related to AI and human-centric attributes such as critical thinking and adaptability. He emphasized that while competencies like machine learning, data science, and programming languages are foundational for today’s engineers, qualities such as communication, emotional intelligence, and creativity are equally necessary to effectively collaborate with and complement AI systems.

Ranjan noted the transformative impact of AI and Generative AI, even in their nascent stages, on accelerating innovation and enhancing individual efficiency. He pointed out that various content creators, including writers, advertisers, artists, and musicians, are already actively experimenting with these tools. Furthermore, these technologies are fundamentally reshaping organizational operations and engagement strategies across industries.

The Chief Digital Officer also presented a forward-looking perspective on global competition, suggesting that in a digitally driven economy, future rivalry might manifest as ‘AI Nationalism.’ In this scenario, leadership would likely fall to individuals, companies, or nations possessing the most efficient and powerful algorithms.

The award ceremony, where these insights were shared, celebrated the achievements of undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Departments of Automobile Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, and Production Engineering. The event took place at the PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (PSG IMSR) Auditorium.

Beyond the specific technical proficiencies, the broader industry consensus reinforces the need for a hybrid skill set. Experts suggest that to thrive in the coming decade, professionals must synthesize in-demand technical skills with human-centered abilities that AI cannot replicate. This includes learning agility, cross-functional fluency, and continuous recalibration of career paths. Reports indicate that roles combining human skills with AI knowledge are growing significantly faster than others, highlighting a shift where AI augments human capabilities rather than replacing them. This creates a more collaborative environment where technology and human intelligence work hand-in-hand, focusing on higher-value tasks like strategic decision-making, creative thinking, and client relationship management.
