TLDR: Flipkart is strategically deploying artificial intelligence and significantly upgrading its logistics infrastructure, including expanding its quick commerce initiative “Flipkart Minutes” and dark store network, to ensure faster deliveries and a superior customer and seller experience during its upcoming Big Billion Day sale. The e-commerce giant aims to personalize shopping, provide real-time insights to sellers, and combat fraudulent activities, all powered by AI.
As India gears up for the festive season, e-commerce giant Flipkart is making significant strides in leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and enhancing its delivery capabilities for the much-anticipated Big Billion Day (BBD) sale. While the official dates for this year’s sale are yet to be finalized, typically falling in late September or early October, Flipkart is already teasing innovations designed to elevate the shopping experience for millions.
Flipkart’s Senior Vice President (Consumer Products), Ramesh Gururaja, highlighted that Big Billion Day is a “symphony” where all parts of the company converge, including collaborations with banking partners for attractive offers. The company is introducing new innovations to enhance customer experience, with content being machine-generated and tailored to individual customer needs. The product pages have been decluttered and modernized, and a new “Deals” section aims to highlight offers without overwhelming users with extensive product lists.
A core focus for Flipkart is the integration of AI across its operations. According to Gururaja, Flipkart is leveraging AI to summarize product descriptions, ratings, and reviews, thereby aiding customer decision-making. Sandhya Kapoor, Flipkart’s Senior Vice President (AI), elaborated on the growing role of AI, stating, “There will be more generative AI becoming the foundation for automation… It will aid in visualizations, video e-commerce, and forecasting inventory needs.” Furthermore, AI is being utilized to combat fake sellers by analyzing behavioral data elements in real-time.
Beyond customer experience, Flipkart is empowering its sellers with AI-driven insights. Bharath Chinamanthur, Flipkart’s Senior Vice President (Technology), noted that the sale would include “real-time actionable intelligence,” providing sellers with data on geographical signals and customer cohorts. This aims to help sellers operate at scale by offering detailed insights into product performance, geographic demand, and competitive density.
Faster deliveries are another cornerstone of Flipkart’s strategy. The company is building a two-tier logistics model to position delivery hubs closer to demand, simplifying the experience for both sellers and buyers. Flipkart has also aggressively expanded its quick commerce initiative, “Flipkart Minutes,” which was piloted in Bengaluru last year. It has now expanded to 14 cities, operating over 200 dark stores. The ambitious plan is to ramp up this dark store network to between 500 and 550 outlets before the Big Billion Day deals go live, ensuring rapid delivery—even within 8-16 minutes for a wide range of products including groceries, electronics, and smartphones. This move reflects a growing consumer expectation for faster, more efficient fulfillment.

The Big Billion Day sale has historically been a massive event, with the 2024 edition recording over 7.2 billion site visits and deliveries to more than 19,000 pincodes. This year, Flipkart aims to build on that success by combining cutting-edge AI technology with robust logistics to deliver an unparalleled shopping experience, offering significant discounts across categories like smartphones, laptops, and fashion, alongside enhanced speed and convenience.
