Fivetran Reportedly Pursuing Acquisition of dbt Labs in Multi-Billion Dollar Bid to Bolster Data and AI Market Position

TLDR: Data integration firm Fivetran is reportedly in advanced discussions to acquire dbt Labs, a data transformation company, in a deal valued at several billion dollars. This strategic move aims to merge their complementary data offerings, enhancing their competitive edge in the rapidly evolving data and artificial intelligence landscape.

Fivetran, a prominent data integration startup, is reportedly engaged in negotiations to acquire dbt Labs, a key player in data transformation, in a deal estimated to be worth billions of dollars. This potential acquisition, as reported by sources with direct knowledge, signifies a strategic effort by both companies to consolidate their positions and enhance their competitiveness within the dynamic data and artificial intelligence (AI) markets.

Both Fivetran and dbt Labs offer complementary services that are crucial for modern data stacks. Fivetran specializes in automating data movement from various sources into data warehouses, while dbt Labs provides a framework for data transformation, enabling analytics engineers to build and deploy data models more efficiently.

The proposed merger is seen as a response to increasing competition, particularly from the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence, which is reshaping the demands on data management and analytics. By combining their strengths, Fivetran and dbt Labs aim to achieve greater scale and offer a more comprehensive data platform, potentially paving the way for a future initial public offering.

This development follows Fivetran’s recent acquisition activities in 2025, including the purchase of Tobiko Data in September to enhance its open-source data transformation capabilities, and Census in May, which specializes in reverse ETL. These acquisitions underscore Fivetran’s strategy to evolve from a specialized ETL provider into a broader data platform vendor, offering end-to-end solutions for data ingestion, transformation, and activation for AI and analytics applications.

Similarly, dbt Labs has also been active in expanding its offerings, notably acquiring SDF Labs in January 2025 to integrate robust SQL comprehension capabilities into its dbt platform, aiming to improve developer efficiency and data quality.

The two companies have a history of strong partnership, with over 1,000 mutual customers relying on their combined technologies. Fivetran was recognized as dbt Labs’ Technology Partner of the Year in 2023, highlighting their deep integration and collaborative efforts to automate data pipelines and deliver meaningful business insights.
