European Media Alliance Unveils AI Chatbot ‘ChatEurope’ to Combat Disinformation

TLDR: A consortium of 15 major European media organizations, spearheaded by Agence France-Presse (AFP) and backed by the European Commission, has launched ChatEurope. This AI-powered chatbot is designed to counter online disinformation by providing users with journalist-verified information, drawing from thousands of articles produced by its members. Available in seven languages, ChatEurope aims to offer reliable, cited answers on European affairs, geopolitics, and other key topics, directly addressing the spread of fake news on social media platforms.

In a significant move to combat the pervasive spread of online disinformation, a powerful consortium of 15 leading European media organizations, led by Agence France-Presse (AFP), officially launched ‘ChatEurope’ on July 9, 2025. This innovative AI-powered chatbot is designed to provide citizens with journalist-verified information, aiming to be a reliable counter-narrative to the unverified content proliferating across digital platforms like X, TikTok, and Telegram.

The initiative comes at a critical time when trust in mainstream media has reportedly declined, and a substantial portion of the population, particularly over 40% of Europeans under 30, relies on social media as their primary news source. This reliance has contributed to a continuous stream of conspiracy theories, hate speech, and misinformation, which can erode trust in credible journalism, impact elections, and even incite violence.

ChatEurope distinguishes itself from other consumer-facing chatbots, such as ChatGPT, by exclusively sourcing its information from verifiable and trusted outlets. Users interacting with ChatEurope can expect factually correct and unbiased answers, each accompanied by full source citations. The chatbot’s knowledge base is built upon thousands of articles produced by its consortium members, which include prominent names like France Médias Monde, Deutsche Welle, El País, and Romania’s RFI.

Christine Buhagiar, AFP’s director of development and diversification, emphasized the urgency of this adaptation, stating, “Media urgently need to adapt in the face of pervasive disinformation and the advent of artificial intelligence. ChatEurope will be a game-changer when it comes to information on European affairs.” Andreea Pleșea, Co-Founder and CEO of DRUID AI, the Romanian enterprise AI platform that designed the chatbot, added that the tool enables “natural, human-like conversations” that help people access credible information in their own language.

The technological backbone of ChatEurope involves a Large Language Model (LLM) developed by the French AI company Mistral, with its infrastructure hosted by Paris-based open-source software provider XWiki. The platform is accessible in seven languages: English, French, German, Italian, Polish, Romanian, and Spanish, with the capability to respond in all official EU languages, making it widely accessible across the continent.

Co-funded by the European Commission, the project maintains a crucial commitment to editorial independence, ensuring its credibility. While the creators assert the bot is free of algorithmic bias, early tests by some outlets have indicated that the chatbot occasionally provides outdated or irrelevant answers, highlighting areas for ongoing refinement. Nevertheless, the overarching goal remains to foster informed public discussion on significant policies and events, providing a direct and reliable alternative for citizens seeking verified news and information.
