Ethereum is making a significant stride into the future of artificial intelligence with the formal introduction of the ERC-8004 standard, a groundbreaking framework designed to serve as the foundational infrastructure for autonomous AI agents. Dubbed “Trustless Agents,” this new standard is set to revolutionize decentralized AI-driven commerce by enabling intelligent agents to interact and transact seamlessly within the blockchain ecosystem.
The proposal, co-authored by Ethereum core developer Davide Crapis and Google’s Jordan Ellis, addresses critical shortcomings in existing protocols, such as Google’s own Agent2Agent, which currently lacks integrated payment functionality and a robust mechanism for agents to establish trust on the open internet.
At its core, ERC-8004 relies on three lightweight, on-chain ledgers: Identity, Reputation, and Validation. These ledgers provide the necessary infrastructure for AI agents to discover, verify, and trust one another without requiring prior human intervention. This distributed trust layer extends the existing Agent-to-Agent (A2A) protocol, which is already hosted by the Linux Foundation and utilized by over 50 partners.
Ethereum’s inherent capabilities for handling payments and identity verification make it a natural fit for this new economy. On-chain transactions directly solve the payment issue, while technologies like Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) can provide secure digital identities for AI agents.
Further enhancing its capabilities, ERC-8004 is complemented by the integration of HTTP 402 (a dormant web standard for “Payment Required”) with EIP-3009. This integration allows AI agents to process stablecoin transactions in real-time. For instance, self-driving taxis could autonomously pay for maintenance, or AI models could settle fees for generating content on demand using stablecoins. Coinbase’s implementation of HTTP 402 is already demonstrating this technology’s practical application.
Ethereum’s multi-layer architecture is deemed ideal for supporting the anticipated massive volume of AI agent transactions. The secure base layer handles high-stakes transactions, while scalable Layer-2 solutions, such as Base, are designed to manage high-volume microtransactions. This design is seen as a significant advantage over other networks like Solana, whose current architectures may struggle to sustain the load of a full-scale machine economy.
Davide Crapis projects that within three to five years, the majority of Ethereum’s network traffic will originate from machines, a trend supported by data from the IndexBox platform highlighting increasing machine-driven economic activity. The AI agent market is projected to grow to an estimated $24-27 billion in 2025, with Ethereum expected to capture a 17% share, driven by projects like Virtuals Protocol, which already boasts over 21,000 agents.
Institutional adoption of Ethereum has also accelerated in 2025, bolstered by regulatory clarity. The U.S. SEC’s reclassification of Ethereum as a utility token under the CLARITY and GENIUS Acts has paved the way for Ethereum ETFs, including BlackRock’s ETHA, which saw $2.2 billion in inflows in August 2025. These ETFs offer exposure to a deflationary asset and access to staking yields, with 29% of Ethereum’s supply now staked.
