Enterprises Seek AI Insurance as Generative AI Risks Escalate, Report Reveals

Businesses are rapidly integrating generative AI (GenAI) across their products, services, and internal operations, unlocking unprecedented opportunities for innovation. However, this swift adoption also introduces novel categories of risk, prompting a significant push for specialized insurance coverage.

A recent report by the Geneva Association, titled ‘Gen AI Risks for Businesses: Exploring the role for insurance,’ sheds light on how corporate insurance decision-makers perceive these emerging risks and their expectations from the insurance sector. The study, which surveyed 600 corporate insurance decision-makers across major economies including China, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US, reveals a landscape of rapid AI integration and growing concern.

Key findings indicate that a substantial 71% of businesses have already deployed GenAI in at least one functional area. Alongside this widespread adoption, an overwhelming majority—more than 90%—expressed keen interest in obtaining dedicated insurance coverage for AI-related exposures. Furthermore, two-thirds of these firms are willing to pay at least 10% higher premiums for such protection.

Evolving Risk Landscape and Insurability Challenges

The report identifies cybersecurity as the most pressing GenAI risk, followed closely by third-party liabilities and potential operational disruption. However, the nascent nature of GenAI technology presents significant hurdles for insurers. Verifying exposures and accurately quantifying potential losses remain difficult, echoing challenges encountered during the early development of cyber insurance.

Similar to cyber risks, GenAI carries the potential for correlated losses on a systemic scale, making pricing, reserving, and capacity allocation particularly complex. Discussions around exclusions and narrow policy wordings are already prevalent in the market, suggesting that risk transfer alone may be insufficient without enhanced risk transparency.

Insurance Market Response and Future Outlook

In response to these evolving demands, insurers have begun to address GenAI exposures through policy extensions and the introduction of early-stage standalone AI products. The report emphasizes that modular coverage structures and cross-sector partnerships will be crucial for narrowing protection gaps and fostering sustainable insurance solutions. This trajectory is seen as mirroring the evolution of cyber insurance, which matured from basic add-ons to comprehensive standalone policies as underwriting expertise developed.
