TLDR: Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Embark Studios, highlighted the use of generative AI and machine learning in the upcoming game Arc Raiders, including the ability to generate 3D weapon models from YouTube videos and animate robot enemies. While acknowledging AI’s ‘pioneering’ potential to transform the industry, Söderlund firmly stated that ‘the human aspect is still essential,’ underscoring that AI serves as an assistive tool rather than a replacement for human creativity.
Patrick Söderlund, CEO of Embark Studios and a former Electronic Arts executive, has shed light on the integration of generative artificial intelligence and machine learning within the development of their highly anticipated looter shooter, Arc Raiders. Söderlund expressed a strong belief that generative AI tools are ‘pioneering’ inventions poised to ‘completely change how this industry functions.’ However, he concurrently stressed that ‘the human aspect is still essential,’ indicating a balanced perspective on AI’s role in creative processes.
Embark Studios has demonstrated advanced capabilities, including the capacity to generate 3D weapon models directly from YouTube videos. While it remains unconfirmed if Arc Raiders specifically utilizes this functionality for its weapons, the technology showcases the studio’s innovative approach to asset creation. Furthermore, the game is confirmed to employ proprietary machine learning tools for the animation of its large robot adversaries, streamlining complex animation tasks.
The discussion around AI in Arc Raiders also touched upon player speculation regarding AI-generated voice acting. This follows Embark’s previous multiplayer title, The Finals, which utilized ‘a combination of recorded voice actors and AI based [text-to-speech] that is based on contracted voice actors,’ as explained by Embark’s brand director Sven Grundberg in December 2023. The studio has yet to confirm whether Arc Raiders incorporates similar generated voice-acting.
Embark Studios’ general stance on AI integration is articulated in their development process statement: ‘During the development process, we may use procedural- and AI-based tools to assist with content creation. In all such cases, the final product reflects the creativity and expression of our own development team.’ This philosophy positions AI as a supportive technology that enhances, rather than diminishes, the creative input of their human developers.
Söderlund’s remarks differentiate Embark’s specialized, internal AI applications from broader, more general-purpose AI systems like Microsoft’s Copilot. The latter, designed as an ‘omni-capable companion tool’ derived from vast, often unpermissioned media, aims for widespread workforce cuts by generating a ‘local surplus’ of productivity. In contrast, Embark’s tools are presented as relatively specialized and internally focused, designed to assist specific creative tasks without replacing the core human element.
