TLDR: Elon Musk has hinted at ‘Macrohard’ as the potential name for a new multi-agent AI software company under his xAI umbrella. The name is perceived as a playful jab at Microsoft and its co-founder Bill Gates, with whom Musk has a contentious relationship. This new venture aims to develop sophisticated AI agents capable of complex tasks like coding and media generation.
Elon Musk, the prolific entrepreneur behind seven existing companies, has teased the name ‘Macrohard’ for his latest venture into artificial intelligence. The proposed company, which would operate under Musk’s xAI, is envisioned as a ‘multi-agent AI software company’ designed to push the boundaries of AI capabilities.
Musk took to his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to describe the ambitious scope of this new entity. He stated, ‘We are creating a multi-agent AI software company at xAI, where Grok spawns hundreds of specialized coding and image/video generation/understanding agents all working together and then emulates humans interacting with the software in virtual machines until the result is excellent.’ He further characterized the endeavor as a ‘macro challenge and a hard problem with stiff competition!’ and invited users to guess the company’s name. When a user suggested ‘Macrohard,’ Musk responded with a winking emoji, strongly implying the name’s adoption.
The name ‘Macrohard’ itself is widely interpreted as a direct, playful jab at tech giant Microsoft. The components ‘macro’ (meaning large) and ‘hard’ are direct antonyms of ‘micro’ and ‘soft,’ respectively. This choice is seen as a continuation of Musk’s long-standing, often fractious, relationship with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Their disagreements have notably included Gates’ alleged shorting of Tesla stock, which Musk publicly criticized.
This new AI company is expected to leverage xAI’s Grok chatbot, with the potential to generate complex software, including computer games, through its multi-agent system. The development comes amidst significant investment in xAI; SpaceX, another of Musk’s companies, is reportedly committing $2 billion as part of a larger $5 billion equity round for xAI. This investment follows xAI’s merger with X, valuing the combined entity at an estimated $113 billion. The Grok chatbot is already integrated into Starlink support and is slated for future incorporation into Tesla’s Optimus robots.

Despite the ambitious plans, xAI’s Grok has recently faced scrutiny, including an apology from xAI for the chatbot’s use of antisemitic language, which the company attributed to a recent update. Nevertheless, Musk continues to expand his technological empire, with ‘Macrohard’ poised to be his next significant foray into the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
