TLDR: Elastic has finalized its acquisition of Jina AI, a leader in open-source multimodal and multilingual AI models. This strategic move is set to significantly enhance Elastic’s offerings in vector search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and context engineering, solidifying its position as a premier Search AI Platform for developers and enterprises.
SAN FRANCISCO – October 9, 2025 – Elastic (NYSE: ESTC), recognized as the Search AI Company, today announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Jina AI, a pioneering firm specializing in open-source multimodal and multilingual embeddings, reranker, and small language models. This acquisition marks a significant step in Elastic’s strategy to deepen its capabilities in critical areas of artificial intelligence.
The integration of Jina AI’s advanced technology is expected to substantially enhance Elastic’s vector search, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), and context engineering functionalities. This move is poised to strengthen Elastic’s standing as the leading Search AI Platform, catering to the evolving needs of both developers and large enterprises. The acquisition underscores Elastic’s unwavering commitment to delivering open, accessible, and production-ready Search AI solutions at scale.
Ash Kulkarni, CEO of Elastic, emphasized the foundational role of search in generative AI. “Search is the foundation of generative AI,” Kulkarni stated. “Jina AI’s team and technology bring cutting-edge models into the Elastic ecosystem, making our platform even more powerful for context engineering. Together, we are expanding what developers and enterprises can achieve with search-powered AI, while staying true to our commitment to openness and accessibility.”
Jina AI’s contributions include dense vector, multilingual, and multimodal embeddings models capable of processing both text and images, which will complement Elastic’s existing ELSER model. Furthermore, the acquisition introduces advanced rerankers designed to improve retrieval quality for visual and long-context multilingual documents, alongside specialized small language models for grounding tasks such as HTML-to-Markdown conversion. These additions are crucial for enhancing relevance in unstructured data and enabling developers to build and deliver higher-quality context to generative AI systems.
The acquisition also strategically expands Elastic’s team of AI researchers, a move anticipated to accelerate the company’s model innovation efforts. Han Xiao, former CEO of Jina AI and now the newly appointed VP of AI at Elastic, expressed enthusiasm for the future. “Our mission at Jina AI has been to build search foundation models that push the boundaries of retrieval relevance for AI,” said Xiao. “Joining Elastic allows us to scale that mission globally, bringing advanced models directly into real-world applications.”
Elastic has affirmed its intention to continue Jina AI’s established practice of releasing models on Hugging Face and publishing academic research, maintaining its commitment to the open-source community. For enterprise clients, these advanced models will be made available through the Elastic Inference Service on Elastic Cloud, allowing for seamless integration of embeddings and rerankers with Elastic’s robust vector database.
