Bengaluru, India – Global e-commerce giant eBay officially inaugurated its Global Capability Center (GCC) in Bengaluru on Thursday, August 21, 2025, marking a significant expansion of its technology and product development footprint. The new center, located at the Embassy Tech Village on the Outer Ring Road, is poised to become a crucial hub for driving innovation across eBay’s global operations, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) initiatives.
Mazen Rawashdeh, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at eBay, highlighted the strategic importance of India for the company. ‘India is a strategic growth market for the company, not only because of its vibrant e-commerce ecosystem but also because of its unmatched technology talent,’ Rawashdeh stated. He further emphasized that Bengaluru’s robust talent pool in AI, engineering, and analytics, coupled with its global reputation for technological leadership, made it an ‘natural choice for our expansion.’
The Bengaluru GCC is designed to accelerate eBay’s global innovation agenda, focusing on scaling AI-driven customer experiences and product innovation across its diverse markets. The office, spanning approximately 65,000 square feet, will house various functions including technology and engineering, AI/ML, applied research, product development, product management, and data analytics.
This initiative is expected to create upwards of 300 engineering positions, contributing to eBay’s goal of strengthening its ability to serve 134 million active buyers in over 190 markets. Rawashdeh noted, ‘By investing in India, we are strengthening our ability to serve 134 million active buyers in over 190 markets while positioning ourselves for long-term growth in emerging regions.’ He added that such centers are instrumental in ‘reinventing the future of e-commerce,’ with eBay’s strategy centered on ‘AI-first commerce,’ leveraging decades of shopping and selling insights.
The company is actively building robust teams in AI/ML, applied research, engineering, analytics, and business, all of which will directly influence the global customer experience. eBay currently boasts 2.4 billion listings, with 10 million unique sellers already utilizing generative AI features. The work undertaken at the Bengaluru GCC is expected to have ‘global visibility and impact.’

The Bengaluru Development Hub is specifically tasked with playing a crucial role in shaping the eBay user experience, including leading Generative AI development for the company. This move underscores a clear shift in eBay’s global R&D strategy, consolidating key technological advancements, particularly in AI, within its new Indian hub.
