The three-day event, held in Dhaka, brought together global experts to discuss the profound impact of artificial intelligence across various sectors and the challenges it poses to information reliability.
The 4th International Conference on Information and Knowledge Management (i-IKM 2025) commenced on September 16 at East West University’s Manzur Elahi Auditorium in Dhaka, marking a significant gathering of international thought leaders. Organized by EWU’s Department of Information Studies, the three-day event centered on the critical theme ‘From access to action: Rethinking information practices in an AI-driven society,’ highlighting its role in shaping future information landscapes.
EWU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Shams Rahman attended as the chief guest, with Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. M Ashik Mosaddik chairing the opening session and Professor Dr. Dilara Begum delivering the welcome address. In his inaugural speech, Professor Rahman emphasized the pervasive influence of artificial intelligence, stating, ‘Artificial intelligence is influencing almost every aspect of life today. Its use is rapidly expanding not just in technology or data science, but also in education, health, business, agriculture, and even security.’ He further cautioned, ‘However, it is crucial to understand the risks and benefits of AI before using it. For example, in business and administration, the improper use of AI can lead to incorrect decision-making, financial losses, or reduced customer satisfaction.’ Professor Rahman also highlighted the challenges posed by AI-generated content, noting, ‘Additionally, AI-generated content makes it difficult to distinguish between false information, misinformation, and disinformation, creating challenges for information reliability in an AI-driven society.’

The conference featured additional prominent speakers, including Dr. Hajime Shirasaka from Japan, with keynote addresses delivered by Professor Bernd Markscheffel of Germany and Professor Jean-Charles Lamirel of France. Professor Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of EWU’s Board of Trustees and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, was also present at the event. This year’s conference served as a pivotal platform for collaboration, bringing together over 80 research papers from six different countries, underscoring its importance in advancing information practices in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
