Dubai’s RTA Partners with Pony.ai for Autonomous Vehicle Trials, Targeting 2026 Commercial Launch

TLDR: Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pony.ai, a global leader in autonomous driving technology, to commence pilot trials of self-driving vehicles later this year. This initiative is a crucial step towards launching a fully driverless commercial service by 2026, aligning with Dubai’s ambitious Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy to convert 25% of all trips in the city to autonomous journeys by 2030.

Dubai is set to revolutionize its urban mobility with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announcing a strategic partnership with Pony.ai, a prominent developer of autonomous driving technology. The collaboration, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on July 6, 2025, aims to initiate pilot trials of autonomous vehicles in the emirate, with a vision for a full commercial rollout of driverless services by 2026. This move is a significant stride in Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which targets converting 25% of all trips in the city into autonomous journeys by 2030.

The MoU was signed by Ahmed Hashim Bahrozyan, CEO of the Public Transport Agency for RTA, and Ann Shi, Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Pony.ai. The signing ceremony was attended by high-ranking officials, including Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, and Dr. Leo Wang, Chief Financial Officer of Pony.ai, underscoring the importance of this partnership for both entities.

Pony.ai brings its cutting-edge seventh-generation autonomous vehicles to Dubai. These vehicles, co-developed with major automotive giants such as Toyota, GAC, and BAIC, are equipped with advanced AI algorithms and a comprehensive suite of sensors, including lidars, radars, and high-resolution cameras. This sophisticated technology ensures precise navigation and safety across diverse road and weather conditions, crucial for the varied urban environment of Dubai. Furthermore, Pony.ai has extended its reach through partnerships with leading tech firms like Tencent and Alibaba, integrating its robotaxi services into widely used digital platforms such as WeChat and Alipay, aiming for seamless accessibility for users.

Mattar Al Tayer emphasized the strategic importance of this collaboration, stating, “RTA’s continued expansion of partnerships with leading global companies in the field of autonomous mobility marks a key step towards achieving the Dubai Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to convert 25% of all trips in Dubai into autonomous journeys across various modes of transport by 2030.” He further added that the operation of autonomous taxis is expected to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors, improve road safety, and offer greater convenience in daily mobility throughout Dubai.
