TLDR: Dubai Culture and Arts Authority has received the prestigious ‘Innovate for Impact’ award from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for its groundbreaking AI-driven project at the Saruq Al Hadid Archaeological Site. This initiative, developed in collaboration with Khalifa University, utilizes advanced AI, remote sensing, and geophysical survey technologies to non-invasively explore and preserve the Iron Age site, identifying over 2,500 potential archaeological anomalies.
DUBAI, July 21, 2025 – The Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) has been globally recognized with the ‘Innovate for Impact’ award in the Smart Home/Cities category by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations’ specialized agency for digital technologies. This esteemed accolade was presented at the Artificial Intelligence for the Public Good Summit, highlighting Dubai Culture’s pioneering efforts in integrating artificial intelligence for cultural heritage preservation.
The award specifically acknowledges the project titled “AI– Enhanced Detection and Prediction at Saruq Al Hadid Archaeological Site.” This innovative initiative focuses on the Saruq Al Hadid Archaeological Site, a significant Iron Age location in the region. Developed in collaboration with Khalifa University of Science and Technology, the project employs a sophisticated blend of remote sensing technology, advanced AI applications, and geophysical survey techniques.
Key technologies utilized include Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), magnetic surveys, and high-precision mapping. These non-invasive methods allow for thorough exploration of the site without disturbing its delicate historical context. The research has yielded remarkable results, leading to the identification of over 2,500 anomalies that strongly indicate the presence of potential archaeological artifacts and features. Earlier efforts at the site, also leveraging advanced technology, had already demonstrated a 30% reduction in excavation time and costs, underscoring the efficiency and sustainability of these approaches.
The Saruq Al Hadid initiative was selected as a winning case study at the summit and is slated for inclusion in ITU’s final report. It was also prominently featured during the ‘Innovation for Impact: Winning Case Studies’ session, showcasing Dubai’s commitment to leveraging technology for cultural advancement on a global stage.
Hala Badri, Director General of Dubai Culture, emphasized the significance of this recognition, stating, “Receiving this award affirms our commitment to adopting forward-thinking technologies to preserve and promote our cultural heritage.” She further added that “By applying AI and other non-invasive methods, we not only safeguard the past but also strengthen Dubai’s cultural voice on the international stage.” Muna Al Gurg, CEO of the Museums and Heritage Sector at Dubai Culture, also commented, “This recognition is a reflection of our belief that heritage and innovation are not mutually exclusive; they are complementary forces.”
